This is my first post to Optics Talk but I've been reading the posts for sometime and have enjoyed the wealth of information that can be gleaned from its pages.  Now to my question:

I recently purchased a Browning A-bolt Medallion in 300 WSM and after much research (both here and from other sources) have decided to mount a Burris Signature Select 4x-16x AO scope with posi-lock to the gun.  I have also researched scope rings and bases and based on many recommendations, feel the Talley Lightweight Aluminum 1" Scope Mounts are what I want.  The question I have is what height should I purchase, medium or high.  I want my scope bell as close to the barrel as possible, but still be able to put BC flip-up lens covers on the scope.  I appreciate any help/recs I can get in this matter and look forward to the responses.

I have a set on my Tikka-T-3 and a Remington 700 and they are the way to a great setup.

I have a set on my Ultra Light Arms 22 Rimfire. This is the company Talley bought the Rights from in order to produce for other guns other than just Ultra Light Arms. I like my set a lot, wish they made them for 30mm scope tubes. As far as which set you need...ask Talley, he can most likely tell you.

I haven't used the Lightweights, but I can certainly attest to the quality of Talley's steel rings.

Also, I like the "split horizonal" design of the LW's.

My steel rings had a "vertical split" design.

44mm adjustable objective, and B/C flips.

I'd go with the high's for sure.

From Talley:

Ring Height Selection Guide:

Low Ring Ht for scopes up to 44 mm objective with standard barrel contour.  Medium Ring Ht for scopes up to 50 mm objective with standard barrel contour.  High Ring Ht for scopes with a 56 mm objective with standard barrel contour.  Ex-High Ring Ht for large objective scopes with heavy contour barrels and single shot rifles.

You can get 30mm rings from Talley.

An update for those interested.  I contacted Talley via email about height of scope rings for my particular set-up and one of their customer service reps emailed back stating that the Talley 1-piece lightweight aluminum rings in low or medium would work fine for my set-up (see above post for exact set-up).  I decided to put the mediums on, for fear of the scope not "fitting" on the rifle with the "lows", and they worked perfectly.  The scope sits just high enough above the barrel to allow for BC flip-ups.  I've bore-sighted the rifle, but haven't sighted in at the range yet.  So far, however, I'm very impressed with the fit/look of the rings.  They feel really solid and appear to hold the scope very well.  With the mediums I feel like the height and "cheek-weld" is just right for me.  Of course, the true test will come when I can get some time at the range.  I'm expecting they will work just fine though after talking with many people who've mounted their scopes with these rings/bases.

As far as the 30mm rings that "fourinone" required about, supposedly Talley is supposed to offer some of the 1-piece lightweights in the 30 mm version sometime in 2006.  When and for which rifles, I haven't heard.  Maybe someone else knows?  I'll let you know if I have any problems with these when I shoot my rifle soon.  Just gotta find the time...........

Here's a thought: Buy both from your supplier on a credit card....Try both and return the ones you don't use for credit. Most come in packages that can be closed up for return.
