Dear Opticstalk users,

my name is Alex and I have a tricky question. Maybe you can help me.

I am an exchange teacher from Europe and currently living in NY. I will return to my homecountry for Christmas and want to take a (civilian) riflescope I bought here with me. I want to leave it in my homecountry as riflescopes are way more expensive than here. Is that possible? I read that the export of riflescopes is strictly forbidden and I don't want to get into any trouble.

Greetings
Alex

Talk to US Customs Service and ask them if that is correct.  I was thinking that the limitations on exporting scopes had to do with any and all models used by the US Military but may not apply to civilian hunting or target models but I am not an expert on that so ask a Customs Enforcement Agent.

That depends on the scope. Which model did you have in mind?

Hi, I thought I might take it with me with the following explanation: After the Christmas break I will come back to the US to continue my job. So I could claim that I am not exporting it but just take it on a holiday stay abroad (and later bring it back). The scope I have in mind is either a Nikon Monarch M3 or a Leupold VX 3 fine duplex, so no military scopes.

I don't believe that an individual can EXPORT.  You are simply bringing home something that you bought.  You may have to pay duty on the other end.
