I'm a brand new user to Opticstalk and just getting into shooting.  I pretty much have decided on a Remingston Model 700 VSSF II is 22-250.  Next is my choice of scopes.  Can someone direct to something to read that will start my education about tactical scopes.  What features they have, how to use them, what they are best for, what they are not good for, those kind of things.  Thanks ...

That is some general scope info, that is quite useful if you are new to this.  Tactical is a very fashionable word these days.  For the most part scopes with "Tactical" in their name are hunting scopes with taller adjustment knobs.  There are a few true tactical scopes out there and they are at their best for tactical applicaitons: they are very beefy, have a large adjustment range, and, if variable, tend to have the reticle in the first focal plane.

It sounds like you have a varmint gun there.  Then a varmint scope might be a better fit.

What is your budget? and what is the intended use of the gun?

Do you want to hold over to shoot long distances or do you want to dial in the correction in Minute of Angle MOA and put the cross hairs on the target?

1 MOA  is 1 in at 100yds    1MOA is 2 in at 200 yds  1MOA is 3 in at 300 yds

so a scope that has 1/4 MOA clicks  will adjust impact  1/4 in at 100     1/2 in at 200      3/4 in at 300

If you are on target at 100yds and your bullet would drop 3 inches at 200 yds you adjust (3 in divided by 1/2  =  6 clicks up - the 6 clicks being equal to 1.5 MOA  With Tactical scopes you dial in your correction.

These days some of the hunting scopes allow you to do this also.

You might like a Leupold VX III with varmit hunters reticle.

The tactical scopes have tall tactical knobs but these can be awkward if you are not used to them.

reading what others have posted will help.
