My favorite tactical scope brand is IOR. Probably the best for you are the 4-14x50 tactical and the 6-24x50 (iluminated or not) , the price is moderate ( they are europeans with german schott glass ).

Are you shooting primarily known distances, or will you need a mil dot or ranging reticle??

Most people don't really "need" a mil dot.

No offence intended.

You may be an 'ol Marine or Army shooter that has had tons of experience with mils. If so, the IOR MP8 reticle may be for you.

Nikon 4-16X 50mm, w/ mildot.

IOR 4-14x50mm w/ MP8 reticle.

These 2 would be within your budget and meet your needs, I would think.

Be sure to install quality rings/bases on your rifle. I have seen too many people spens a kings ransom on optics, and skimp on the rings/bases.

Go Badger!! Yeah, they are expensive. But, they are on top of the food chain, IMHO.

If you want to see bullet holes with your scope at 400 you will need at least a 6.5-20 with very good glass and a large objective lens.

Burris 8-32x50 Black Diamond, Ballistic Mil-Dot.....$689.95

IOR 6-24x50 Tactical, MP8.....$949.95

Leupold 6.5-20x50 Mark 4 LR/T, Mil-Dot.....$959.95

Zeiss 6-24x50 VMV Tactical, Mil-Dot.....$1399.99

You may want to consider a good spotting scope and a 4-16.
