About 6 August I did aa thread on "Name Brand Scopes", the gist of which isthat everything not made by God will break.
The specific example was a Leupold but could easily have been a S&B or USO.

When the scope failed on my AR10 I posted this;
 " The gas gun won't hold a group or shot placement to save it's life, all of a sudden.  It's been running just fine."

It would have been beneficial had I posted how it was that I knew it was the scope and not some other thing......like maybe the trigger operator for example

If you're in the tactical game you've probably invested in a very expensive rifle if you take things seriously, and topped that rifle with a very expensive optic.  It behooves us to keep records of what's going on with that piece of equipment so we'll know just when it's due for maintenance, just like oill changes for our vehicles.

I maintain a log book of who/what/when/where/how many for the rifle, who shot it, what was shot in terms of ammunition, when I shot it, where I shot it and how many rounds are fired.  This lets me judge based on past experience when a new barrel can become a requirement.  Or checking the action screws, or disassembly to check the trigger group, etc.

I keep a visual record of my scope and ammunition, the same record sufficing for both purposes.  I shoot a cold bore target each range outing, then do a cold bore group, and retain those targets with appropriate data anotated on the target.

Here's a record target of a cold/clean bore shot from 11-27-05 detailing conditions, position ammunition and location;

Here's a like record from 9-09-06,

Just for grins here's a crappy cell pic of the rifle built by PacNor;

You can see the scope, ammunition, and shooter have remained consistant and there's not much to do besides routine maintenance.  When the AR10 scope went nuts all I had to do was check the visual record to be sure that it should be returned for warranty repair.

Hope this simple information is helpful to some of you.

Thank you Mike, as you already know I am one of the biggest fans of your work here at the OT.

I do not know if you have seen the movie Pulp Fiction but I would compare you to the Wolf,

nothing but a pure proffesional. Your posts are part of what makes this my favorite website on

the net. Please keep us updated and in check on anything you can, thank you again.
