Thinking about the SS10x42 but I like the idea of a variable. How would the Nikon 4-16x42 Monarch with mil-dot do? The rifle is for target shooting but also possible law enforcement use. I'm using a Smith Ent. mount. Would I be better off spending more money for a Leupold Mk2 or Mk4?

Or, since my Rem 700 would probably be used in a fixed position as opposed to the M1A, should I move the Leupold 4.5-14 MK4 from the Remington to the M1A and put a SS10x42 on the Remington? I would most likely be more mobile with the M1A.

Be advises, scoping an M1 is a pain, the scope floats way out over the top and cheek weld becomes an issue.  Be ready to either mount a cheek piece or get a stock pack - or break out the duct tape and old socks.

You might consider taking advantage of that mountingheight by going with a largert objective scope.
You could easily mount a 56mm unit while still using low rings, giving you a much expanded pool of optics to choose from.
I run a MkIV M3 unit on mine and can park my car on the hand gaurd under the scope,

Nothing terribly wrong with a high mount though, as long as you can raise the cheekpiece to accomodate.

If you get really high you may even need an adjustable buttplate to keep everything locked together properly; rifle, scope, shoulder, cheekbone, eyes and hands.

Admittedly, it looks like ass, but it works hella great.

The Millett is gone, waiting to figure out what will replace it.

I'm trying to go with a smaller objective, say 40mm or 42mm so I can also use the iron sights as a back-up.

Yea, 16" with cluster rail.

A friend has an AR10, his has the weight more centered mid-gun, but I do love the M1 action - and I do hate the Stoner action, too many memories of cleaning that damned thing.

I love the M1... stupidly did not purchase one when I had a chance to get one at a reasonable price. Now I REALLY want one and can't afford it.  One of my all time faves... of course, I like the M21, as well.  Archaic, I know.  My two favorite weapons on earth and I don't have either one.

Why dont you compromise and get a DCM Garand  http://www.thecmp.org/m1garand.htm
That might take the edge off of the pain for only $595.

Gee thanks... I had a hard enough time explaining the new 458 WinMag.  She'll never believe the "it was an accident" story again.

SHE keeps ALL the money... I haven't written but one check in the last 15 years.  At first she said my handwriting was so bad she couldn't make out what the check was for, I figured out that that was a ploy to gain control of finances.  Sharp, hunh???

My wife used to work at a savings and loan and is good friends with the VP at our bank.  Linda was the agent on our construction loan.  I've pretty much surrendered.

Talk about having a guy by the short hairs, there was no where for you turn!!  That is why we have 2 checking accounts, much easier to get things pass the watchful eyes.

Take out cash every week and stow it in a place she will never look.  For my lovely wife, that'd be... never mind, public forum.
