Hunting Scopes don't usually have target knobs and the reticles do not have "long" range target estimation such as the mil dot reticle (exceptions: boone & crocket, tds) Tube construction in hunting scopes also tend to be on the light side and scope endurance tests are only the word of the manufacture.

Tactical / Military Scopes have target knobs for at least elevation if not left or right (So do Long range Scopes used in Target Shooting) designed around distances in mm / inch or meters / yards that are usually designed around reticles such as the mil dot and the Soviet style "Arch" reticles. Military scopes also tend to be on the smaller objective lens size due to wanting to keep reflective signature to a min. Also usually a high end "tactical" style scope gets the snot beat out of it by many folks besides the manufacture before adoption; so usually its contruction bears this in mind.

The differences can be broken into at least 2 catagories, visual and use. Tactical, exterior adjustments for more refined shot placement, hunting scopes slimmed down for carry, which tactical rarely have done. But I personally think the only thing is the nomenclature. Afterall any hunting scope could be used for tactical given the same magnification. Tactical scopes however do not make good varmit scopes (cross hair too wide and click stops to large and usually sight picture far to busy). But consider this headline in a major paper- Hostage taker shot with varmit hunting scope. sort of makes the situation personal something most government agencies go to great lengths to avoid.-so scope makers take a step back and reconfigure the object to "divorce" it. gun makers do the same thing. The Super Duper 308 police model- dull black- no shiney beeeaaaautiful deep blue here, or hand rubbed Circausian walnut to admire in the coffee break room. What amazes me is that the average shooter falls for the price difference. There are exceptions to the price gouge. SWFA's SS series-an outstanding value-aimed (pun intended) at the more serious shooter.
