may find interesting

We have recently been told by the Canadian Army Snipers Research and Development team that they prefer any Leupold scope over Night Force, US Optics or Schmidt & Bender on their McMillan Tac-50 (Mk-15), 50 caliber rifles. They believe that the clarity of a Leupold is better at distance (2000m) than the others, and that they have never had any issues with Leupold scopes breaking. We have always thought the opposite, plus we have had a few variable power Leupold scopes come back broken, so we no longer put them on our Tac-50's. However its hard to disagree with best in the world. Any comments on this issue???

All of my high dollar scopes are Leupold Mark 4 tacticals and I have been happy with them. They seem to be strongly prefered in Law Enforcement and Military circles but I still think the competition better all be pretty special to merit paying more than the $299. you pay for a 10x Super Sniper. Any scopes can break after all they are glass and the military beats the hell out of equipment.

That's interesting.  I was shooting at a target at 2350 yards with a .50 that had a Nightforce on it.  At equal power to my eyes the Nightforce looked much clearer to me than a Leupold MK4 that was sitting on a gun we were using for a spotters scope.  I am talking night and day difference too.  I guess everyone's eyes really are that much different.

What is the source of the quote?

If they are looking through some Leupy that is more clear than USO or S&B, they are looking through a Leupy I have never seen.

As much as I like my Leupolds I think we can be reasonably certain that the S&B, U.S. Optics and Nightforce all have better glass and the price tag to go with it, but the mechanical system in the Leupold is quite consistent and not to be overlooked  as an issue of consideration in a combat optic.

I see it was attributed to Ryan McMillan, but has anyone verified that he did say this?

It definitely seems to be Ryan, and he is as baffled by the comment as anyone.

Some people still insist the earth is still flat, go figure.  Maybe the Canadians get Canadian Leupys that don't fail so much. Or ever.
Maybe they got a great deal from leupy to make such a strong and idiotic statement.

At the end of the day, I know Leupold makes nothing in the league of S&B PM2 or USO SN3; if Canadians haven't figured that out, fine; it'll make it that much easier when we overthrow them and make Canada state #51.

They do make good maple syrup.

doubly strange is that the canadians worked with uso for several years on certain features considered standard.

The US Optics scope was designed  for the Prairie Gun Works Timberwolf 338 LM SWS that the Canadian Military has adopted .That being said the US optics scopes failed in trials Internal fogging of optics I believe that this issue was a result of poor test result recording as no definitive answer has been made to the cause of the failure IE: submerged test or high humidity chamber . The decision to go the S&B was motivated IMHO by personal opinions.

Yes there are 2 scopes currently in service with the TAC 50 the Luepolds MKIV are being phased out of service and are being replaced with the Schmidt & Bender PMII this the  Army issued  scope ,The Spec ops model rifles belonging to the CSOR are a combination NightForce and Schmidt&Bender PM II. This transition to the S&B PM II for the Regular army rifles should now be completed

Really.  Why are they getting the S&Bs now if the prefer the Leupold the best.  They could buy two Leupolds for every S&B.  That doesn't make much sense.

Trust me there was a lot of undue intereferance in the whole SWS program from the get go. .There is a standardization program going on in the Canadian Forces as far as optics goes for the Sniper rifles with the exception of the Special Forces Units. It was deemed that all scopes be standardized when the Praire Gunworks 338LM  Timberwolf rifle was accepted the Army .I know from discussions with several CF sniper's that they liked the Leupold MKIV on the Tac 50 However they have little choice in this matter
