if i where to use the TA55a which has the BDC set for 175 gr ammo..

how would i take it into account that if i use surplus SA 140 gr ammo

for short range (< 300 yrds) and for long range (>600 yards)

am i stuck having to use 175 gr ammo all the time

(shooting out of a 20 inch barrel)

You are not stuck having to use specific ammo but every change bullet weight, powder charge, barrel length, temperature, humididty, altitude, etc etc. affects where the bullet goes then add in for Wind. Oh My God. So what you do is take the ammo out to the range and shoot at different distances with the ammo you intend to use and take a note pad to make notes. If you know that your BDC is set for your barrel length (often not the case) with 175 gr at 600 yds and it's dead on and  you test the 140 grain and find that it is 6 inches high at 600 yds because it is a faster bullet then you know where to hold. The trick comes at the point where the lighter faster bullet looses energy and drops velocity faster than the 175 gr while the slower heavier bullet wins the race at 1000 yds. When the bullet drops below the speed of sound it becomes less stable. But not to worry people  are built up & down so if you are a little high or low you still hit something and at distances that are really critical say under 300 yds there should not be too much difference but there will be some.
