New member here.  Been reading a good bit and you guys seem to know your stuff so here's my question.

Just won a Savage 17hmr in a raffle and want to put a good scope on it.  My budget is $250 or less.  I've been looking at 6x - 20-25x varmint scopes.  I have a Swift on my deer rifle that I really like that was in that price range.  Looking now at their 6-24x50 premier for the 17. I have a local retailer who sells them and offers over the counter replacement if I have a problem with it.

I have also been reading good things online about the Mueller Eraticator.  It is about the same price and just wondering who has experience with these?

Is one significantly better than the other?  Does the 1/8 vs 1/4 click adjustment make that much difference?

Other suggestions in the price range are welcome but please don't try to convince me to spend double or more to get a "good" scope, as I am satisfied with my other swift in this price range even after looking through higher-end scopes owned by friends.  I don't need the absolute best to target shoot with especially at double, triple, or more the cost.

Have you thought about the Vortex Crossfires on special for $99?  They are decent scopes and Vortex has a lifetime transferable warranty in the event they break or need service. The glass on them is decent and several members on here use them on heavy kicking guns with no issues.

I had a Mueller Target Series...for the closeout price right now, if they still have the Viper 6.5-20x44 or 50s would be a good buy, otherwise saw some of the burris ones on closeout in your range.

I have one on my Ruger 77/17 and it's awesomw! BEST money I've ever spent. Great combo and my rifle is very similar to yours.

So is the Diamondback better than the Crossfire?

The $99 Crossfire special is cheap, but gets milky at high magnifications, and the eyebox also becomes critical. I would think twice before getting one ( have two for my two sons' 22LRs rifles , for shooting on the 100 and 200 yards ranges), but wish I had not bought them).

Look at the Vortex Vipers.  More money than the Crossfire but better optics too.  I have four of the Crossfires with the 30 mm tube and have no complaints with them on my bench rifles.

I have 3 of the Swift premier 6-18x44 AO scopes.  Each is mounted on a centerfire rifle and I've been quite happy with their optics.   I just shoot paper at a local range on a regular basis.....so each has withstood a fair number of rounds fired with them.

For around $240 I put a Mueller 8x32x44 on my new Savage 17hmr. I plan to stretch things out a bit.
This scope is very clear and bright with great repeatable exposed target turrets.

Cheers,

Tye
