ive owned my swfa ss 3-9 for a year and a half now and have been happy with it. The 700 .308 it sits on has about 800 rnds thro it. My 22 is a savage mark II and has a 3-10 weaver tactical and im gearing up for a rimfire shoot. As far as the glass, they are both good enuf for my needs (i only own 3 scopes and the other one is the viper 2-7 which I am happy with also).

When shooting yesterday i compared side by side the ss and the weaver and noticed the ss has a finer reticle than the weaver (which is funny since the SS is a FFP scope and the weaver is a SFP). For 90% of the shooting i do the reticle thickness doesnt matter, but with some of the rimfire targets the weavers reticle covered the target up more, where as the SS allowed a lil more precision. So for this competition im gonna steal the SS from my 700 and put on my 22. I realize this is not a rimfire scope and the parallax is not set for 50yrds but neither is my weaver scope, but i produce good groups with it (i have a cheek rest). Another thing I noticed is the SS has less blackness around the field of view at higher power, where as the weavers is plenty good enuf for me but it is kinda like a tunnel.

The question – ive never noticed this bfor (maybe b/c I don’t shoot a 308 at 50yrds much and i usually shoot at steel?), but with the SS scope at 9x the white pieces of target paper had a white glow to them (if that makes any sense),there was no defined edge of the paper (the edges where radiant). The center of the targets looked normal tho and when I dialed the scope back to 7x the white glowing of the edges went away. What is causing the paper to glow like this?

The SS 3-9X has an undocumented fluoro luminescence detector built-in that only kicks in @ 9X and ranges under 100 yards. Big Smile

Seriously though, sounds like you're just dealing with some chromatic aberration or fringing that becomes noticeable under the right conditions, e.g. short range, highest magnification. As you mentioned, the scope is being used in a way that it usually isn't so it probably wasn't tested to see if it had effects like that under those conditions. Even if it was, the case could easily be made that that is outside it's normal use, especially for what the scope costs.

I'm not saying you're complaining...just trying to explain what is happening and that these aren't normal operating conditions. I haven't noticed any effects on targets at ranges past 100, but it never occurred to me to try the SS 3-9 any closer. Every scope has some negatives to it. I have one scope that cost many times the SS and it is heavy, only has parallax adjustment down to 50 yards and gets fuzzy under 25 yards. But between 50-1200 yards it is awesome.

Good luck with your competition!

If this has a purple hue, this is called Chromatic Aberration.
I noticed this on 9 power on mine as well.  It is an optical flaw.  If you do some reading on camera lenses this is a big deal.
