I am trying to decide if I should get a Steiner Military 3-12 Illuminated G2 Mildot for $1099, or wait for SWFA to have a sale on the 5-20HD non-illuminated for $975.

I currently own a SWFA 5-20HD, and like it except for the illumination, but have heard good things about the Steiner but have never got a chance to test drive one.

The scope will either go on a Steyr SSG 04 20" or an Armalite AR-10 SASS (both .308) and I will be shooting steel out to 1000 yards.

Glass comparison, reticle thoughts, and magnification opinions are appreciated.

  Thanks!

Does Steiner make a 3-12? Their website and SWFA both show 3-15x50.

Yea. its a discontinued model. They are floating around online for 1000-1100ish originall they went for over 2k.
A friend has one, but I've only handled it breifly. Its a long scope.  reticle simple design, thick, but useable.  Illumination works in the day time, off stop between brightness levels. Its FFP, has zero stop and a 2nd rev indicator on elevation. Also rev limitors on the windage which is cool.3-12x to me is fine in my opinion. should work for most shooting applications.  Knobs solid clicks, not really a thunk thunk feel though.

Maybe talk to Koskin. Here is one of his reviews. he doesnt review that exact model but one from that series of scopes.

I would be hard pressed to formulate an "apples-to-apples" appraisal of a 3-12 and a 5-20.

"Need" and "want" are very different things, this is obviously not a "tool for the job" look at the options.  I'd say get the one you want.

This is what is turning me away from the Steiner.  A thick reticle is not good, especially on a 12x scope.

It looks like I will just be patient and wait on the next SWFA sale, and get the non-illuminated HD.

Thank you!
