    Posted: November/18/2015 at 17:58
I am going to put a Swfa scope on my Tikka(more than likely a 6x42) Superlight and wanting some input on which 30mm rings to use.

I have thought about the Warne rings which clamp directly to the receiver as it SEEMS like it would be a sturdier setup than using a rail and then clamping rings to the rail. The scope which is over 20 ounces seems like might be too much mass moving for just a few screws holding either a rail or the Talleys for that matter.

I like the Warnes because they are steel but have never used Vertical rings on a centerfire. And they are a little heavy but the weight is not a big deal as rifle is plenty light anyway.

Anyway, for those who have used 30mm Rings on a Tikka T3, I would appreciate your input .

No.

No, no, no!

I have a few sets of the Warnes, have tried them on Tikkas, they are agonizing to mount.

My T3s wear Talley lightweight rings, awesome setup, easy to mount, much better option than Warne. I have 3 T3s and have mounted optics on another 10 probably. And the stock rings, throw them directly into the trash. Directly.

The Talley LW rings are universally recommended here and at a couple other sites as well.  They are only $40.00

The Warnes are $18 more, and not recommended.

Its a no-brainer.

Also, those Warnes are narrowly clamping on to a thin detent.
The Talleys are screwing directly into the receiver.

If I look at the top of the receiver on my Tikka:

Looking down I see 4 screw holes (filled with screws from the factory) and a hole to fit a lug (used on some rails or Tikka/Sako mounts)
Looking on each side is a long groove/indent near the top.   Said groove extending from approximately 1 inch forward of the ejection port back to almost the cutout where the bolt rotates vertically to lock.

The Warne rings clamp on to that.  Frankly I think that design sucks, because recoil should be imparting rearward impetus to the rings.  It might be that there is something else in the ring.

Now I assume you were talking about these: http://swfa.com/Tikka-C2391.aspx

Looking at it again I do see (in the right mount) a small pin, so I guess that fits in one of the screw holes.  It doesnt look big enough to fit the recoil lug hole, and if designed for the screw hole it gives more flexibility for one of the mounts.

I would still prefer two loctited screws going into the OEM holes (per mount), in a brand of ring/mounts nearly universally recommended, over the Warnes which have the reputation of being a pain to install for a Tikka.

As it is I have 2 Tikkas.  They both currently have rails, I am going to remove one rail (on the 223) and go with the Talleys.

Good looking girl, RC.

Tikka's sure are a great bang for the buck. If they just felt better to me.....

That long groove you see is part of the rifle.
As the rifle recoils back the scope wants to stay in place and in fact when a scope slips in the rings it slips forward toward the muzzle.

The pin does not go into a screw hole it goes into the recoil hole .

different strokes for different folks as it seems to me that sturdy steel rings that clamp directly to the rifle would be MUCH stronger than tiny screws holding aluminum rings to the receiver.

Now the Talleys may well be strong ENOUGH but I still think the Warnes will be stronger.

As far as ease of installation then yeah I think that the Talleys would be much easier to install.
BUT I have Lapped and bedded scope rings and I imagine that is more difficult and labor intensive than installing Warne rings.

Sounds like I just talked myself into using the Warnes !!

Thanks for all the input guys,I appreciate it.

I have talley light weights on a 7 lb 300 wsm and a 45-70.  They both have quite a large amount of recoil.  Never had an slippage or bolts breaking.  Talleys are tough stuff.

I like Warne as well and have several sets, but when I can use Talley light weights they get the nod for sure.

Hi
I have been thinking,reading and
Have changed my mind about the Warnes,I just dont like the Vertical ring.

I am going to go with a Tikka Performance center Rail
With the stud in the rail I think that will help control any shear force on the small screws.

Probably use the Swfa Low rings along with the 6x42 MQ

Thoughts on this setup ?

Thanks

Superlite rifle, but heavy scope and mounts? Anyhow, you can get a DNZ mount or even Talleys+lapping kit for what the rail plus rings cost and save some ounces if such is a consideration.
