I would like to put an optical sight on a 16" AR-15 for perimeter work and entry.  My 41 year old eyes don't like the iron sights much any more.  I have looked at the ACOG and Elcan. I am open to other suggestions.

What would you recommend and why?

Jim

i would look into an aim point or eotech... they will not cost you nearly as much not even half of what u would pay for the elcan or acog and personally i think they are much better... i have used the eotech on a friends springfield squad scout m1a i was very impressed... the aimpoint is also very good just depends what u want i suppose....

If you need magnification and you don't want to worry about batteries, your initial ideas are both good.  If you just need a non-magnified electronic dot and you don't mind having to have batteries then Manuel's suggestion makes a lot of sense.

After reviewing the Eotechs, I will throw this out there.  I live in Alaska, and it is conceivable that I could be out in -40F weather.  The Eotech says it is only good to -20F.

Now what looks good?

my vote goes for the ACOG, but if you would liek to save money, the runner up IMHO, would be the aimpoint.

I would probably get the ACOG also.  It really gives you the best of all worlds: good for close range and allows for precise aiming at longer ranges.
