I am looking to buy my husband a swarvoski scope for his rifle as a gift. I know nothing about scopes. He hunts deer in Georgia and Illinois so some field and some woodland. I looked at a Z3 4-12x50 BRH but still not sure. Looking to stay around 1000.00 or so. Any advice? Is this a good gift for a hunter? thanks

What kind of rifle does he have, e.g. a .30-06? Also, does it currently have a scope? It would be nice to know what the magnification range is and whether he likes that. The reason I ask is he may think 4 is too much on the low end if he's used to something in the 2-3 range. For woods hunting I'd recommend something as low as 1.5 even on the low end, but fields of course sometimes more is desired than 6 or 7 on the high end.

First, pat yourself on the back for being a good wife!
Then ask your husband to talk with you about his guns! He'll be delighted, and you'll learn a lot!
Ask him if he really needs a scope to hunt deer, and what kind would work best on his rifle. Before you get through with that discussion, you should have a pretty good idea what he likes and what he wants.
Your best choice may be to give him a Christmas card, put a picture of a scope inside, and write a personal note telling him your present is up to $1,000 towards the scope of his choice at SWFA. Let him do his own picking! And don't be surprised if it takes him a while! Half the fun is working out what you really need and want!

IMHO Swarovski is the Holy Grail of scope choices. For deer hunting the Z3 4-12X50 is an excellent choice but I would go with a Plex recticle. But the gift card suggestion is a good one or buy the scope but make sure it can be returuned or exchanged.

I own a Swarovski AV 3-10x42 that is very nice. The Z3 line has replaced the AV, not sure if there is any difference besides marketing (but if there is it then I'd expect it would be some sort of improvement given Swarovski's reputation). If I was going to buy another, I'd be looking at the Z3 3-9x36.
I personally like the #4 reticle but lots of people prefer the Plex. Its mainly a matter of personal preference, so maybe see what your husband likes.

First of all any product with the Swarovski name on it is top shelf. I also agree with the others that before you lay down that amount of cash be sure of your husband need and wants as far as hunting optics go. As far as I know most hunters would be extremely proud to own any product baring the Swaro name!

That is a great git for a man that shoots and hunts. The Swarovski Z3 is a very nice scope and is a great value for a very high quality scope.
