I am looking at these 2 scopes as well as the 2.5-10x42 HD5. I have a Z3 4-12 and really like the weight/size. Is there a big advantage in low light to the 42 over the 36? Thanks!

There's no such thing as a 3-9X42 Z3. The 3-9X version is only offered with a 36mm objective.
There is a 3-10X42. That's probably what you were referring to.

I have both of those scopes. Theoretically the 42mm objective offers a slight advantage in low light over 36mm. However, in practice, I can't say that I can tell a difference when both scopes are dialed to the same magnification. Then again, I also haven't ever done a side by side low light comparison between them, as doing so has never interested me since I can use both well beyond legal shooting hours.

Both are very good scopes and both perform as well as scopes get in low light when compared to other scopes of the same objective size and mag range.

I have the 3-9x36 and like it a lot. (Afraid I haven't experienced the others listed but I don't think any would be a bad choice).

Whatever you choose, enjoy your shooting!

Thank you very much for the responses. Sorry about the 3-10x42....I accidently put 3-9 on the 42. I currently have a Z3 in 4-12 and love it but I also have a few Conquest that I love as well. The Z3 seem a "tad" bit better for my eyes but it is close. I was considering an HD5 only for the Lotutec coating. They are basically the same money but the 3-9x36 is very compact and lightweight. It's a tough call for me at the moment because I really want the Z3 but I also want Lotutec for bad weather. How does the Z3 do in the rain? I've not had a chance to test my 4-12 out in rain yet.

The Z3 behaves like any other scope without hydrophobic coatings in the rain. If rain gets on the glass, they have rain droplets on them that will remain until they either evaporate away, are wiped away, or they gradually run off, the same as any other lens without these coatings.

Don't want to sound flippant, but minus some kind of hydrophobic coatings causing droplets to bead up, rain drops will adhere to all lenses, regardless of brand or quality.

I wish all scope manufacturers used these coatings, as I find them to be useful.

I am getting a Z3 3-9x36 (great scope) to replace my vortex. I suppose it matters where you live at when comes to coatings. It doesn't rain here during hunting season so no need for them here.

I had both the older Swaro 3-9x36 AV and 3-10x42 AV on separate deer rifles.  As good as the 3-9x36 was for a compact scope it was not in the same class for brightness and resolution as the 3-10x42 to my eyes.  It didn't take low light to see the difference either.

mathmatically you should have one power more max brightness on the 42 vs the 6mm smaller 36.
7x6 = 42 max brightness at 6 power
7x5 = 35 max brightness at 5 power
any power 5x or below should appear virtually the same brightness on either scope.
any power 6x or over the 42mm will have a slight advantage but not much.

Thank you! Looks like I may do the 3-10x42 or maybe another 4-12x50. Just need to decide for sure if the HD5 with Lotutec is worth trying over the Z3.
