I'm trying to decide between the Swarovski and the Leica for a spotting scope. I'm looking at the 65 and
80mm Swarovski and the Televid 62 in the Leica. As far as warranty goes it looks like Leica offers a lifetime
replacement option (Passport) but I've read conflicting information. Does Swarovski offer lifetime coverage
for damage and defect or is it just 10 years of coverage? Damage? Defect?

Thanks Much

Although I am pretty confident in my sources, I am not 100% sure of what I'm going to tell you here so, verify it before you make a purchase.

In EUROPE the Swarovski products (as well as those of Zeiss, Leica, or whoever) offer a maximum warranty of 10 years.  This is because there are laws on the books for the European Union that forbid warranties of any greater length.

In the USA the Swarovski enjoys essentially the same (limited) lifetime warranty as all of the other manufacturers.

(Yet another reason that I'm proud to be an American!)

I also found this posted on the web (emphasis added:)

Your optical instrument has been designed to give you a lifetime of service. Every part of this instrument has been carefully examined during production, assembly and final inspection, and found to be free of defects before it was released for shipment.

Swarovski Optik warrants this instrument during the life of and as long as it is owned by the original owner against defect in materials and workmanship, subject to normal use. This warranty is void if damage results from unauthorized repairs, accident, alteration, misuse, abuse, neglect, fire, flood, or other acts of God.

"This warranty will not become effective unless the warranty registration is completely filled out and returned within thirty (30) days of purchase by the original owner."

We recommend that you insure the package and enclose your name, shipping address, daytime phone number, and a brief description of the problem. Also, please write the RA number on the outside of the package. We will determine, at our option, whether to repair or replace the instrument. If the instrument is not covered under the warranty, we will contact you with an estimate of the repair price.

This is a Limited warranty, and you may have other rights which vary from state to state.

The obligation of the warrantor is solely to repair or replace the product or to refund the purchase price. The warrantor is not liable for any incidental or consequential damages due to such defect.

Warranty should not be an issue in selecting any of these two brands, as long as the scope was imported by the USA distributors.
