I mostly punch paper for groups at 100 yards.  Lately, I have been increasing my shooting at distances up to 500 yards?  I was debating between the 16 and 20 power super sniper scope.  Would the 20 power have much more problems with adequate light in the scope or mirage?  If not I think I would enjoy the extra power.

Teutonic,

welcome to the OT

I would go with the 16 power for the little extra. but honestly a 10x would work great out to 500 yards.

Your exit pupil (band of light coming through the scope) of the scope will get smaller than the pupil in your eye once you start going above 10x with a 42mm objective.  That means things through the scope will look darker than it really is outside.  That really bothers me, but some people are okay with it.  I shoot out to 1000 at 10x, 10x is great for 500 yards.

I've had one of the 20x SS acopes and it was noticibly grey in the evening as the sun goes down but in bright daylight it is not eaven noticible. I think you would enjoy either of them. I still have two of the 10x but am thinking about picking up another one maby a 16x this time. I doubt there is much difference between the 16 and the 20 so try the 20x if you think you would prefer more power.  I will note that with the higher power scopes it becomes increasingly helpful if they are variable rather than fixed if there is much chance of useing it in low light .  For daylight target get the 20x.

I am using a 4-16x50 Nikon Monarch on my varmint rifle, but would like one for to transfer to a heavy barrel centerfire.

While the 10x is the all around favorite the 16x and 20x do have their place and each has its limitations. How much you plan to use the scope in lower levels of light - late evening is the main factor. In bright daylight the 20x is a wonderful thing and I would gladly buy another one but I understand its limitations and its advantages.
