The original contract the Super Sniper was award for the 10x scope(s) this I know, but was it explicitly for the side focus 10x42M or rear focus 10x42 model?

If anyone knows I would love to hear the answer, I am going to order either the 10x42 or 10x42M from SWFA hopefully by tomorrow, and this is the last bit of information I want to know before purchasing, but I could not find the answer anywhere.

I'll try to get you an answer on that.

Have you checked out the SS website?  http://www.supersniper.com/index.htm

Good deal!

I thought the "M" Marine was the first, but I wan't certain.
I prefer the rear focus unit.

Prefer the rear focus? Let me guess, you are left handed?

Both 10x scopes are built to specs, the M was the marine model and the first type submitted during the trials. The older M models had a less recessed sun shade though.

I shoot left-handed but still prefer the side parallax.

I shoot right-handed too, then it ain't an issue.

Here is a picture of one from our Optics Museum.  The S.E.A.L.s wanted the objective lens at the very end of the scope so that they could more easily clean the lens off when coming out of the water.  It was later changed to have a recessed objective lens because the lens was suffering too much damage and acted as a signal mirror.
