I purchased a SS 20x42 I think back in 2003. It was for a flat top White Oak Precision ar15 upper being built. When I got the rifle, it shot so well with peep sights, I boxed the scope and put it away. I have since pulled it out the closet, scratched it up mounting it, just to discover that I can't see anything clearly.

I am unable to get a clear/ unblurred picture @ 100 meters to save my life. It's like plastic is on my lens. I set my cross hairs and use the parrallex knob for focus to no avail.

My questions are:

(1) anybody else have this problem?

(2) was there a bad run of scopes, with this problem?

(3) Is there plastic (shipping/packing) covering the lens that I'm missing?

If no is the answer to all the above, then maybe, because I scratched it with $140.00 rings trying to get a picture, maybe, I can see if SWFA will swap mine for a used (equally scratched) 10 x 42 SS so I can see paper clearly.

Help needed based on positive optic clearity reviews.

Thanks

Have you tried to adjust the eyepiece focus ( not the parallax focus) at the very rear of the scope?

Henry455,

Mine has the focus for the cross hairs on the back end of the scope. I was told to look at the sky and adjust my cross hairs til in focus and never change again. To obtaine a clear picture of target I was to use the 10m,50m,100,200m,etc adjustment as the way to adjust for parrellax.

Thanks

i think Henry455 is referring to the Diopter adjustment.. not the Rear Parallax.

back of scope you'll see a ......+/0/- markings..

The diopter is what I was told to use to set the cross hairs. After that, use the rear parallax...

Akjunkie,

Per Cheaptrick's recommendation, I spoke with the "Optics Goddess" who I ordered the scope from originally. She was patient and a pleasure to deal with.

I sent the scope back yesterday and will update post with end result.

Thanks

Akjunkie,

Last Thursday a 10x42 was shipped to me so I can take a look thru it. If I am happy with it I can keep it. If not, I can opt for full credit towards another scope.

Now that is stepping up to say the least!

If I choose to go with a different scope, for $150.00 more I am thinking about a factory refurbished Zeiss Conquest . The one that's variable up to 14x with a 50 inch bell, 1inch tube and a lifetime warranty.

I should get the 10x42 by Wednesday of this week.

What way would you go?

i'd go with the 10x42M... i prefer the 30mm tube over 1 inch.. got more adjustment further down range.

u talking about a Zeiss with a 50mm objective? u gonna mount it on your AR flat top?  that's gonna give a pretty high chek weld.

42mm objective would be pretty good for an AR set up.

The 20 x is a little more critical on focus than the 10x and not nearly as bright later in the evening but the one I have has served well for targets in the 200 to 600 yd range and rides a good deal lower than a 50mm scope.

The Zeiss has great glass and I really like the 4.5-14 range better than any other power range for both deer and sniper work.

UPDATE

I received the SS10x42 and it was clear, very clear! The decision to keep it was complicated by me wanting to compare the variable powered Zeiss. I sent the SS10x42 back and debated with the "Optic Goddess" over which Zeiss, the 4.5-14x50 or the 6.5-20x50. Stephanie took the time to answer all questions about both scopes and proved very knowledgeable to questions ask of her. Because I wanted more power, I had the 6.5-20x50 sent to me for review.

Upon review, say no more, I agreed with Stephanie. I now own the Zeiss due primarily to the quick view and visual color seen @ 15x along with the lifetime transferable warranty. The full credit given for my SS20x42 towards a like new condition, samplelist Zeiss shows that SWFA stands behind their product and wants the customer happy.

I again, cannot say enough about the high level of service received from SWFA’s team. Stephanie’s customer service, product knowledge, PATIENCE and EFFORT put forth for the customer to be happy with their products was SPOT ON.

Cheaptrick, I am so glad you recommended that I contact the Goddess. She’s a class act and a PIP (pretty important person) to say the least.

Your more than welcome.

Yeah, Stephanie and the gang at SWFA are pretty special.

They stand out among all the rest of the optics dealers in these days of "online purchasing", where customer service seems to be forgotten.

Thanks for posting your comments and I'm glad The Optics Goddess got you squared away.
