Ok, I'm ignorant here.  I've been hunting for several years with a normal 4 x 32 scope.  It of course didn't have a sunshade.  I was sure I would need a sunshade when I buy my Super Sniper 10 x 42, but then I thought why?  To be honest, I cannot answer this.  Why would  I want a sunshade.  Is there some reason I would not want a sunshade?  In the field, do you use a sunshade?

On almost every scope with a magnification greater than 12. some of my shades go almost to the end of the barrel. Most of the ones given with scopes are really to short to be a shade but act as anchor for a longer tube. Some are long enough if the use of the gun doesn't warrant it. Shades cut down on barrel mirage and when shooting into the sun allow the light rays from the target (most parallet to the axis of the bore) to be all that is seen. Spurious rays coming into the scope at oblique angles (the sun) cause cresent glare and flaring which degrades the target image. Sunshades also help protect the front lenses from damaging blows.

For long range dog hunting you need every edge that you can get and a sunshade gives you a little edge as noted above.  Little things add up resulting in a miss and I always use one when varmint hunting.
