The sun shades work well if the sun is behind you or right over the top of you, but if you shoot with it almost in front of you it don't work as well as they say in my opinion.

Sun shades are supposed to help with mirage too. I think they help.

sunshades are not umbrellas. Sunshades are at their best when looking almost directly into the sun, either in early morning or late in the evening. They allow more parallel light from the target to contact the sun and block out the glare of the sun. Most sun shades are too short, they need to be a least 8 inchs. If you get a really long one (I use PVC tube to the end of barrel) they will stop mirage caused by barrel heat. Brownells. com carrys then in stock now. a normal sunshade can be used as a threaded pilot for a really long one. And lastly even a short one works really well for blocking blows to the front lens element.
