I am looking to get a scope to use on an commercial Mauser 98 made by FN. Its chambered in 270 Winchester and the receiver has been drilled & tapped at the factory.

The biggest area being hunted is slightly downhill from the blind and mostly with a handful of  trees in this area. Their is a wooded area farther down the hill and on both sides but probably won't be hunted by me.

This area is roughly 400yds to 430yds to the edge of the woods and about 500yds wide between the treeline .

About the rifle......since I no longer reload I will be using commercial factory loads. I'm not sure which grain weight the rifle will favor so thats an unknown. The Mauser 98 currently has no mounts or iron sights. I might have sights installed because of the type mounts & rings I want to use.

I'm interested in buying Leupold 2 piece QR rings & mounts.

Now the scope! I would like to use a Nikon Monarch scope w/ BDC . The two scopes I like are the 2.5-10 X 50mm and 4-16 X 42mm or 50mm.  I used to have a Monarch UCC 6-20 X 44mm and I was impressed with its clarity and reliability. Of course that would probably be overkill for this useage.

I don't plan on going past 300 yards for a shot as my eyes aren't that great anymore.

Thanks,

The Nikon is a very good scope with a normal reticle. Have you ever used the Nikon BCD?If you have and liked it fine.  I do not like the BCD circles that Nikon used because they are so large. When you get out to 400 yds the circle is around 4 feet in diameter. Getting a shot into a 4 foot circle will not likely get your game on the table. The Burris system in the B-plex is almost perfect for a .270. The small dot they use is easy to sight with at longer ranges. No matter what scope you get, be sure to get a good range finder that is rated to range at least twice the distance you plan to shoot. Having accurate range is the key to shooting at distance. Good luck and welcome to the OT

GOOD advice!  I never thought that.

Also I would look at the Vortex Viper line of scopes with the BDC reticles.  Similar to the burris and great scope too

3_tens,

What magnification are you using?  I wonder if Nikon is aware of these problems with the BDC reticle? I hope its not a problem with their QC. Although I haven't bought a scope in a few years I do have a couple others to check out.  I had hoped to get a Nikon because of the great service that scope gave but I guess I'll have to reconsider. I did look at the Burris line and liked what I saw!

Thx.

I have the 4-12X40 monarch BCD. It is 2 years old and never been mounted. Nikon does not give you any subtentions for the scope. I set up a tape measure at 50 yds then read the size of the circles and also where they connected with the center post top and bottom. It would not work for the rifle that it was bought for. It is clear and works well but the circles end up in my way. I wish it just had the Niko-plex. That rifle now has a 2.5-10X42 Monarch that I love. The problem is trying to make a scope with a BCD that will cover all calibers at one time. There is just too wide of a spread. Thus a large circle. Leupold uses two seperate Magnification settings. Higher mag. for smaller fast calibers and a little lower for heaver bullets. Zeiss has a calculator that when you imput your ballistics, it will output the best fit with a specifis mag. setting . Like 8.3 power for a 300 Win mag with 180 gr.

The first Nikon that I had used the NikoPlex reticle, but I was hoping to find a scope that had a BDC reticle. The BDC plus the available accessories was one of the reasons I wanted another Nikon.

That Nikon  came with a 4" shade and choice of turrrets (6-20 X 44mm) but I felt it was a bit much for the rifle it was on. I went to mount it on a 22-250 Mauser 98 but I couldn't get the eye relief correct so I decided to get a different scope. About two months after I sold it I regretted it. While I got a great return for it being used, sometimes money can be a poor substitute for what you "got rid" of.

The .270 Mauser 98 that I have now I had thought of rebarrelling to either a 30-06 or a 308 but I can't justify the expense at the moment. My son really likes the .270 while I like the 30 cals., because they are generally more versatile IMO. There was one guy on another forum who made a clone of sorts of the Remington 700PSS using a Mauser 98 receiver w/ Krieger barrel on a B&C synthetic stock. IIRC, he was using a Leupold "Tactical" scope.

Regarding the Nikon, I wonder if it would be better using a Mil-Dot reticle in place of the BDC. I was looking at the Leupold custom shop and they can make a scope set up for your particular caliber & rifle combination but I don't even have a clue yet on which grain bullet my rifle will like! LOL!

I found a private party who has a Vari-X-II 3-9 X 50 in gloss finish, but it has a heavy duplex reticle. A long time ago I had heard that for a small fee, the Leupold "custom shop" would change  the reticle in your Leupold scope to another one that they used in scopes.

If this is true I would change the reticle to a long range type. It sort of resembles a modified Mil-Dot just on the lower half of the vertical stadia.

Thx,

Martin
