Newbie here, sure like the forums.   I would appreciate all suggestions and comments for my soon to arrive Match Grade Machine works barrel for my Thompson Encore.  I have this barrel coming in for the the military round that I have many of and thought I would put something together that would give good versatility and the longest range that I can get out of the round.  I am not real sure what that will be but thought I would ask you guys what your thoughts on this round and how much or little scope I wil need.

Thanks

If your shopping for a good deal, might I suguest looking at SWFA sample list.If your looking for a hunting scope the Zeiss Conquest #4 ret is a great buy.For a military type use look at SWFA SS 3-9x42 tactical ffp.

They have a SS on the list for sale now for $499.99 you might want to jump on it very soon, they don't last!

What are you going to use it for? Lightweight deer / hog rifle or are you going to pound paper at the range? since I would see a encore in 7.62x39 as a nifty little light weight deer rifle and your cartridge is at it's best at <200 yds +or -, I would be looking for a pretty compact scope. The 2-7 leupolds vx 1,2&3 are pretty compact as is their cousin redfield. The little 1-3 x20 weaver would also be pretty nifty too on that rifle and should work for deer at the ranges it would be most effective . A compact 4x would also be OK. Just my .02

7.62x39 is a very accurate little cartridge if you handload (most factory loads leave something to be desired in the accuracy department).

However, it is certainly not an optimal long range cartridge, so you do not need a whole lot of magnification.  Ultimately, something that starts at 2-3x tops out between 6x and 10x is the way to go.

I think something along the lines of 2-7x32 (like Vortex Viper) is a good way to go, or a decent 3-9x40.  I recently tested three very nice 3-9x40 scopes that all retail at around $400:

Any one of those three would make a good pick.

Hey thanks you guys,

I have been looking at the ballistics on the cartridge and want to use it for shooting paper as well as varmits, deer, and anything that the cartridge will handle.  That is why I posted, to hear comments on what power and which scopes would be a good fit.  I have one of the 2-7 vipers as well as one of the 4-12x40 that I could put on the rifle.  I would like to lob some lead as far as possible(cause I have a lot of this stuff) so with all that in mind I am trying to figure out which of the scopes to put on this soon to be fine little rig.  Thanks for all suggestions.

My first thought was just what Ilya said; the Vortex Viper 2-7x, would be ideal for that Encore. Then, I read your last post and see you have one already- you'd be hard pressed to find better.

That Viper sounds like a perfect match- you have a fast- pointer at 2X and plenty of magnification at 7x for target shooting at reasonable range for the cartridge.
