Hi all, new here so apologies in advance if I say anything too stupid.
I'm trying to decide on a 3-9x40 (or similar) scope for a Ruger M77 Hawkeye 308 which I've acquired as a second-hand bargain. I'm in New Zealand and looking to buy one direct from the states are the shops here are very overpriced in comparison. I'm told brunoshooters have a good reputation for shipping to NZ so prices/shipping rates quoted from them The catch is that to avoid a 12.5% tax when I bring it in I have to keep the value (all-up including shipping etc) below $400 NZ, currently about $256 US, which cuts out some nice options I'd consider otherwise like the Bushnell 4200, Weaver Grand Slam and Nikon Monarch series. So my list of options so far (prices in US $ for convenience) Weaver K9 3-9x38 - $156 base price, $205 shipped. Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40 - very similar price, 2oz heavier than V9 but has rainguard which is nice. Nikon Buckmasters 3-9x40 - $172 base price, 5oz heaver than V9, slightly more eye relief, possibly better optics? but more expensive. Further information - will be hunting deer, chamois, tahr, goats both in bush and open hill/mountain country, may be used any time of day or night so low-light clarity is a good thing. Walking long distances over rough terrain so keen to avoid anything too heavy, leaning towards the Weaver based on advice of an uncle whos been hunting for half a century and knows such things rather well. Any experience of the above scopes or suggestions for other good options to consider? |

Hey GB,WELCOME to OT!!
Since you mention low light hunting situations I think you may want to consider this scope also due to its reticle:
Here's a bit of info/feedback on that scope and reticle:
Out of the scopes you mention in your post,I'd go with the Bushnell.

Thanks for the replies - the Nikon Team Primos seems very nice (relabeled Monarch?) but unless I've misread something SWFA don't seem to ship outside the USA?

Correct we can not even ship something in the US period if we have the knowledge they are going to export it. Yes it is a relabeled Monarch UCC. It is still a good scope though and probably one of the best under $250.

try any of the hawke optic products in your price range that meets your needs. i have tried them all, except for the expensive frontier scope and own most of all of the other scopes mentioned or something close and the hawke products compare closely or clearly are better. call xxxat the xxxx NA distribution center in the US and talk to him about the scopes. nice guy and the scopes with the SR or MAP reticle stand out in particular.
