I asked this on a local forum but nobody could answer me.

I have a nikon prostaff 4-12 X 40 on my AR and a Nilon Monarch 3-12 X 42 on my browning.  Today I had them both at the range and maxed out at 12 times but the target looked MUCH bigger on the 4-12 prostaff.  Can anyone tell me why?????  Thanks

It is an illusion.  The Prostaff has less field of view, making the object take up more of the field of view, making the object appear bigger.  They are actually magnified the same, with the Monarch you are just looking through a bigger window.

I am not so sure about your reply.....When I looked through both scopes, I could see the bullet holes in the paper with the prostaff.  They were MUCH harder to make out with the monarch.

My reply was regarding the magnification issue you described.  It sounds like the Monarch is either off focus from the focus control (AO or SF), or it is defective.

Prostaff is not a bad scope, but I have never encountered a situation where one outperformed a Monarch.  Different leagues, Prostaff is farm league, Monarch is the majors...
