Got a rifle a few years ago that the previous owner painted, looks nice but I am ready to put it into a different stock and refinish it.  The scope, an older steel Weaver T10, is painted as well.  Since this scope was made 20+ years ago, I am concerned that if I use a stripping agent, the waterproof seals might either not be in tact 100%, or might get eaten away by the stripper.  I am also concerned about the lenses; if I tape them up, the stripper might just eat through it or turn the whole thing into a gummy mess.

So... Given the smooth tube but coarse grip areas around the AO, turrets, etc., is there an easy/safe/good way to strip a scope down to its original finish?  I don't mind a little elbow grease but I don't want to be swabbing cotton balls in paint thinner either   I bought an aerosal stripping agent to strip yet another rifle, and it started to peel the original factory "tactical" coating on the stock.

If just the tube is painted, then use progessivly finer grades of emery cloth in stips like you're buffing shoes. The T-10 is an aluminum tube right? so it's plenty thick enough. Around the turrets I'd use a Dremel tool with a fine wire brush atch.Brownells makes several paints to restore the finish.
There are also "green" strippers that take a long time but generally wont damage anything.
