Anyone have any idea if it's alright to spray a polyurethane finish over an oil rubbed finish on a rifle stock?  Or would the oil finish have to be stripped first?  I'm thinking it might be alright, since poly goes over the top of oil-based stains just fine...

Spraying it you will probably get a little orange peel affect.  Won't be as smooth as a rubbed finish.  If you buff it with 0000 steel wool between coats it will help.

If it were mine. I would strip it, lightly sand it, restain it, then poly it. Poly is not the funnest thing to take off if it dosn't work right. From what I have seen you have a 50/50 chance. Those Odds are not in my favor.

Like BD said, I'd strip it first then re-do.
