What applications would the SS10x42HD be recommended over the SS10x42?
From what I've read the HD stands High Definition glass and Heavy Duty. I understand the benefits of the HD glass, but the weight listed for SS10X42HD is less than the weight listed for the SS10X42. Does heavy duty in this case mean that stonger materials and not necessarily heavier materials?
For target shooting with a .308 out to 600 yards, is the superiority of the SS10X42HD worth the extra $500?

The Glass is better in the HD and the HD is MIL/MIL. Trust me I shot with a 10X42M for years and when I test drove the HD. It was jaw dropping different. They upped the price but they also jumped WAY up on scope.

How does the glass on the standard and HD compare to a 4200 or VX-III?

HD glass is better. "Regular" 10x is a toss up. The 10xHD is more scope than the price. To get something "equivalent" will cost you a LOT more money. Mine is on my .50BMG and it loves the ride...

The glass on the HD is as good or better than my 6500.

I have both the original 10x42 and the HD version. Both are excellent, but if you can afford the HD version, go with that. The glass is better, and the knobs are better. Clicks match the reticle, so ranging and dialing in is a snap.

I have the same scopes as steelbentz & I'll go as far as to say the 10X HD is better than my Bushnell elite 6500.Not only that ,the SS is made better & the turrets are far superior with more elevation.
