Hello,

I just picked up a Remington 700 VS LH in .308 cal. I will be using this for target shooting only. My  local range has 100m  - 600m but at this time i stay on the 100m due to not having a scope. I am looking at SS10x42 or this

http://rifleshootersite.com/pro516571.html  Please let me know what would be the best to go with.

It depends on which you want- precision or accuracy? I use a  6x18 VX-II on a CZ in 204 as a light varmit carry gun. It has hunter covers, 1/4 angle but a 1/8" hair with 1/4" angle target dot. I use it for precision the ability to place a large number of shots within a statisically small area with a gun weight in the hood of 7 lbs. . Also it is much smaller than the SS and carries better. The SS however has a fast focus on the side and "target knobs" (oversized easily knocked off settings) and weighs more. It is difficult to see how close your loads are grouping with only 10x. For target shooting at a range set up either would be fun. It's when you get them off the range that the difference shows up. On the fun factor scale the SS with a mil-dot set up would be great at a set range where most rifle shooting is done anyway. I wouldn't want to carry one in the Rockies for Rock chuck hunting.

The Leupold and the Nikon are in the same boat with the Leupold just having slightly better optics. It's hard to get someone to make a decision for you when you are questioning a fixed power against a variable. What do you like best? For strictly target shooting the super sniper would be pretty sweet and will offer a lot. If you need more power I would probably get a spotting scope.

Its a tough choice but somebodys got to make it.  If you ever plan to hunt with the rifle I might go with the smaller lighter variable power leupold but for shooting at the range either will work for you. You will find that should you wish to sell or trade the scoped rifle at some point not everyone is familiar with the SS like they are with a Leupold.   I don't think that you need a higher power than 10X but I like my 8.5-25 so buy what makes you happy or just get both like I did.  It's always good to have a second rifle to shoot while the first one cools down.
