I'm a newby at all of this so forgive me for being so naive. I just purchased a Savage 12BVSS .308 and want to outfit it with a good quality tactical scope but I am limited on funds. As one guy put it, the Minister of Finance wouldn't allow for a scope that costed more than $500 and unfortunately that's my story as well but I'm limited to about $400. That doesn't leave me many options but I have come across the Super Sniper SS10x42M (I refuse to say Tasco) and the Bushnell Elite 4200 4x16x50 that seem to fit the bill. I have a different dilema too, one is a fixed power and the other isn't. I'll be shooting up to 600 yards and I'm not sure that a 10 power will get me close enough. Remember, I'm a newby so I am still learning all this stuff. I will also be changing the stock on the gun too to a tactical stock so I'm going for a tactical scope. The bad ass look is important to me as well. Can anyone help me out here with these two scopes or suggest a different scope that is $400.

Newby, For a good Tactical Scope $299 it's a great buy for one of the SS Scopes. I have 3 SS16X42 scopes they are mounted on a Remington 700 PSS 308 (Police Sharpshooter), Savage 10FP 223 (Police Tactical) and on a Springfield M1A. I shoot 100 Yard targets but I like to see my target up close and personal!! Your normal urban or city police snipers or military snipers use 10 power scopes and very rare they will take a very long shot. My opinion since your saying your going to shoot for about 600 yards a 16 power wound be good. If you had a 50 Cal the 20 power SS would be a my choice specially for those 1000 yard shots!!!  Concerning the Bushnell I haven't experianced any problems on those scopes. But your have to ask yourself some questions will most of your shots be in close range 100 yards or in the 200 to 600 yard range most of the time? Over the years there has been many questions in general for the accuracy of variable scopes and fixed scopes. For Pin Point accuracy a fixed scope is the best and mostly chosen by sniper teams. The variable scopes due to the machanics the moving of additional parts your Point of Impact will change in a small degree depending on the quality of the scope you buy. But after you think how your going to use your rifle and if you want great accuracy in a variable scope. Save some more money and get one of the Leupold Mark 4 PR 4.5-14x40 for $689.95
here at SWFA. You'll see a great differance in quality optics.

Well these are my opinions I'm sure you'll get some more from other folks.

Have Fun!

Well said M1.  The Elite is more of a hunting scope, meaning its emphasis is on low light performance not robustness (is that a word?).  A tactical scope is built to with stand the harshest conditions and treatment and still be dead on accurate.  The simpler the scope the better it is for tactical work.  The SS was designed and built to be a tactical scope and was built to military specifications.  If you want a true tactical scope in that price range, then I don't see any other options.
