Disregarding price, which is a better scope:  Burris XTR 10x or SS 10X?

I can't say, though the SS is a danged hard one to beat for being tough.... Remeber the original SS was built to Mil-spec. and the SWFA SS is built to the same specifications as the original. I believe the glass is better in the new ones though.

The SS has had much more success and acceptance among tactical shooters than has the Burris. For what it's worth.
And the price difference is significant for what seems to me to be little or no advantage.  The glass in the Burris will be about the same, not better.

FOV is almost same
Eye relief is almost same
power is same
Burris has bigger objective (may or may not be advantage)
SS has better turrets, I think
weight is similar
length is similar
Burris is $600, SS is half that!

Well since price is no object just buy two of the  Super Snipers and send one to me. Big%20Grin
Oh I do already have two super snipers and I have had the 10x Leupold Mark 4 LRT. The thing that I have told others that still holds true is that the next step up in quality/ value for the money is the 6x42 IOR Tactical and If you have the money to buy the Burris you should probably be thinking VARIABLE like so:

sorry no Kenton knobs for this which makes it a toss up between the IOR 's better glass and the Leupolds Primo service and ability to get Kenton knobs.

I've been waiting on this one as I don't know a whole lot about tactical optics. The only one I have is a 6x42 Leupold Tactical with Duplex, so there you go. I need to feast on this stuff in order to get into this deeper.
I am a Burris fan of over twenty years and wonder what market they are after. The SS obviously is seen in harms way. The Leupolds, S&B, IOR and others are also.
What market are they after is my question? I have no doubt the glass is very good. The price lies somewhere between the SS and Leupy's and I just wonder. Is the market for us civilians shooters that just want to have some of the stuff that the military uses, mil-dots, turrets, etc, that big we can have a new player?

if money isn't an issue buy a unertl 10x, gunney hathcock swore by them. as you guys know he greased a target at 2400+ yards, that was a 1 1/2 mile kill shot 40 years ago with one rigged to a 50cal
don't run you only die tired

I have the XTR mounted on a Tikka Tactical and I love it. The glass is great and it is built like a tank. It is however heavy and expensive with the illuminated reticle.

That a fallen Marine loved a piece of gear available 30 years ago does not mean I would recommend it today.  Unertl would NOT be on my recommended list as the company is in dire straights.  I would, if money is no object and the bet 10X fixed is needed, recommend USO's MST100; however, having handled an MST100 and a SS, I cannot say the USO is worth, in my estimation, 9 SSs. ($2750 vs 299.)

If you want the very best combat-proven fixed 10X, USO MST100: if you want a serviceable 10X that will probably never fail you and will meet all state-side needs, I'd get the SS and pocket the $2,400, maybe use it to set up a damn nice reloading outfit and make loads that increase accuracy more than the USO ever could.

But that's just me.

This is an interesting thread to me.  I am waiting for my Burris XTR to arrive and the SS to arrive for the Test Drive.  Will be interesting to see what I think.

Andy, I'm glad your going to do a head to head.  I would like to hear your input as I do not own a Burris scope.  The Burris 10X is half again the price of the SS and I'm not really a fan of their mil-dot. The big difference will be the 42mm bell of the SS against 50mm bell of the Burris.  The Burris has the SS beat (theoretically) by the amount of light transmission, but is it worth the extra cash to get it.? Also give us your feed back on the mil-dot systems between the two.

   Thanks ,
            Mike

Will do Mike.  It will be interesting to see how they do side by side.
