I am ordering a Savage 93 BTVLSS in 17hmr for use as a yard gun enforcing the no fly / rat and other vermin free zone on our farm. This gun is mostly an entertainment piece of sorts so shots will be 50 to 200 yards at fairly  small stationary targets.
I have a ss 10x42 scope in excellent  shape that I took from a AR  I no longer own . should I consider swaping it for a 16 or 20x ss scope, targets include rats mice various birds including crows black birds and starlins . thanks in advance

I would stick with the 10x.  Better exit pupil for those early morning invaders, and enough mag for 200 yards easy.

BB, I didn't realy considered light transmission , but I certantly am now . I often pop at crows at dawn. I even shoot rats under the d2d light at night.
I was just wanting to be evtremely precise in my shooting and figured more power would help from a prone position.

Personal preference on that one. It stuff is still an you have a solid rest you can use a 20x it would be rather grey in low light but lots of fun.  Why dont you try the 10 see if you want more power and if you do trade it. Actually I would probably wait a couple months and the original SS line of fixed power scopes will be available with the new Mil Quad reticle and 1/10 mil clicks.  You could start the process now by working the trade and gettin your order in line for a 16 or 20 they should be out in a couple months.  I know I want to try a 16x as Ive had the others.

So your intended target at 200 yards would look like it was 20 yards away through the 10x.  Can you hit your vermin at 20 yards with open sights?  I think the 10x would be plenty, and much more versatile than the 16x or 20x.  I like UF's idea of trading in on the mil-quad/mil version though.

I would stay with the 10x. At 50 yds you would not have much of a FOV with a 16x or a 20x. Making it hard to find your target at close ranges.

congrats on the .17... I love mine.  Okay okay, I love my family and the like the .17, but you see what I mean.  I have a 4X12 on mine and rarely crank it up.  shoot "tree rats" up to to 75 yds with no trouble.  I can't imagine having a 10X on mine.

Good luck and don't forget to post a pic when you get it set up!
