All I read is 5 star reviews on SWFA's SS line.
I've got a custom bolt magnum I use strickly for whitetail's.
My shooting range will most likely be 50-500 yrds.

Do you think the SS 3-9 would work fine for this range? I've been used to scopes that run up to 20x +.
How about the 10X HD? Too much X for close in?
I feel like I could make either version work, and I'm itching to see the
HD glass in action.

There's an HD on the sample list for $699. I'd just like some pros & cons on my considering these scopes in a pure LR hunting application.

Under 100 yds a 10x is a bit difficult to get onto a deer with however it is quite useable from 100 yds on out or given adequate time it can be used closer but its a lot of magnification for a 50 yd shot.  Either of these scopes will work for you for hunting 50 to 500 yds.  I have two 300 WM rifles that have the 3-9 on them and a .308 that has the 10HD on it. I do notice increased deatail with the 10HD at 600 yds and would be quite comfortable hunting it.  One thing to consider however is that a 10x42 has a 4.2mm exit eye pupil and a 3-9x42 when placed don 6x or lower has a 7 mm exit eye pupil so it will be a brighter scope in low light conditions.

The 3-9 will work just about perfect for your intended purposes.

Another vote for the 3-9. I have one on my 270, and shoot out to 600+ yards.

I have the 3-9SS on a 308 and have used it for two seasons now and I am very pleased with it. It has a slightly bigger profile than some of my other scopes but not overly so. It carries and balances nicely on a heavy barrelled rifle. I use it on my truck gun and I don't  have to worry to much about bumping it around. I think you would be well satisfied with the 3-9.

The 3-9 SS is a fine hunting scope. Here is my opinion.
