Wondering how SS 3x9x42 glass compares to other scopes. Zeiss, swarvo, leopold etc. I have read alot of the post about the scope but none really gives a comparison. Have looked at the scopes listed so I know how the glass is on those, but I don't have access to the SS. Thanks in advance for your time.

Good as most Nightforce or higher-end Leupold. Not as good as Zeiss or Swaro. Glass matters to a degree. For most shooting, decent glass will be fine and is better than great glass and crappy internals. The SS 3-9 is solid, consistent and a scope that - while I only shot using one for a review - is one I'd put up against anything else out to 600 yards in almost all conditions. It's a great value.

Well I have several of the SS and of course Zeiss &   Mk4 Leupolds etc.  I do not feel that I am giving anything up by using a SS on a rifle compared to the other scopes I have. I will say there is a marked difference between the old fixed power SS scopes and the new variable models that are made in a different factory. Personally I was never really excited about the glass in a Nightforce but the mechanicals are superb.  I like the SS glass better than the Nightforce but not as well as the Zeiss.  The SS is a purpose built scope it is designed to dial in correction and most hunters do not do that - their loss. I am particularly fond of the new mil quad reticle and have two of the 5-20.  Just recently they introduced a non illuminated version of the 5-20 which is a tad more affordable but there is a rumor from Chris Farris that Black Friday will be THE TIME TO BUY ONE AT A SUPER PRICE.

Thanks for the help. I also like the veiw through the zeiss conquest. Seems to have more vivid color. Sorry in layman terms. Most of the stores in my area carry mainly Zeiss and Leupold, and of course some of the lower end scopes. I mainly hunt but why limit myself if i want to shoot targets. May not use the turrets but they are there if I need too. Found one of koshkins post that was really informative. I just don't have alot of experience with alot of different scopes, for comparison.

The SS scopes are a good place to start learning about tactical scopes.  Most of the really good stuff is  very expensive but these have pretty good glass at a affordable price.   There is a  rumor that there will be some BLACK FRIDAY price specials likey on the SS scopes that might be a good opportunity for you to buy one.  I will suggest that if you order one in and do not mount it only examine it keeping it in the same condition it would not be a problem returning it and exchanging it for a different scope. That does cost you the shipping but it does give you an option to examine one and make a decision after having it in hand.

The HD models (SS 5-20X50 and 10X) have glass that is far better than NF. Looking at targets out to 300, I couldn't tell the difference between the 3-9 and a NF 2.5-10...although in low light the larger objective on the 3-9 would help. Personally, the magnification range on the 5-20 is more than I want for hunting, but man I was impressed with it...mounted and zeroed in two shots and on my first trip to the range with it I moved immediately over to shooting 4" and 2" gongs @ 300 yards. You can sign up for the Black Friday sale notification here: http://www.opticstalk.com/black-friday-swfa-ss-hd-520x50-non-illuminated_topic30989.html

If the price ends up being less than a grand I'd consider it. If it is less than $900, just get it and like Urimaginaryfrnd says, exchange it if you don't want it. Chances are it will be a scope you'd keep.

To my eyes a 3-9 conquest and a SS 3-9 are equal in glass quality...... maybe my eyes are different from you guys.

Thanks for the feed back. I have to depend on the guys eyes that have looked through the scopes. I believe most on the forum give non partial reviews, which I am most grateful.
