Figured i would post this for anyone else that has a savage mark II. I bought this 22 to get more practice versus breaking the bank with my 308. I have shot out to 200yds with a 22 before and i plan on seeing how far i can stretch the legs on this gun (last gun had a cheapo scope with mildots i used for holdovers).
I got a new savage mark II that came with the junk plastic stock and bull barrel. I put a RT 25moa base and stole the SWFA SS 3x9 off my 700 to test drive this gun with. First thing i did was stiffen up the stock with putty and carbon fiber arrows, then made sure it was floated, and then bedded the action with devcon, made a cheak rest for it. Stock is torqued to 15in/lbs for both action screws.

Ammo i tried - bulk federal, bulk remington, bulk winchester, CCI's, federal match, and remington subsonics.
Results - All shooting was done at 100yrds, off a bipod, scope kept at 6x, and 5 shot groups by 5 different groups.
- bulk federal and Federal match would keep them within a pie plate, pretty poor groups, at this point i was not happy
- bulk remington held 2" groups mostly, sometimes got flyers and opened it up to 4"
- CCI ranged from 1.2" down to 0.8" groups
 - Remginton sub sonics usaully hovered around 2" groups
- Bulk winchester ranged from 1.3" down to 0.9" groups (1 group had a flyer that made it 2")

From these results i will run this rifle on bulk winchester and save some money vs. the CCI.

Now for the scope question... the SS 3x9 scope must go back on the 700 tho im sure the savage will shed a tear when it comes off but i need a scope to replace this with. My first thought is the 6x super sniper (sure wish it had matching turrets, its the only thing holding me back). Requirements are focus down to 25yrds and have repeatable tracking or a mildot type reticle for holding over. Has anyone tried the WOTAC that SWFA recently added to their scope selection? My budget is less than $400.

I just bought a 6x SS for the same purpose, and it works well.  It really isn't too bad running your dope for minutes rather than mils, IMO.

tracking with the 6x SS has been spot on!

I've played with this rifle for 3 yrs now,holds it's own out to 100yds almost equal to my 1710 hb annie,but i did a few mods.First I cut the barrel to 16.2",then dish crowned it to 16" for legal reasons.Then I glass bedded all the way back,that made a big difference.I added Talley rings & put a Bushnell elite 6500 2.5-16x42 on top.What put this riffle into annies range was Wolf ammo.I used Eley black box & remington gold  got the best result with the Wolf.Wally stuff shoots ok but I always get 1 flyer out of every 10 rounds & it just drives me crazy.Almost never have that problem with good .22 ammo.At a distance of 50 yds I will continue to use the wally bulk but for grd hogs & accuracy Wolf.Hope you have as much fun as I do plinking with ths Savage.

Forgot to mention At 50 yds I'll hold .50" groups @ 100 yds I'll hold 1.25" groups.It really is a great shooter.This of course is only if there is no wind & the shooting Gods are kind that day[:}

Somethings to consider when shooting long range 22.
Perspective, with high  mag glass the perspective  (ratio of size of target against wind drift, etc) of the shot is lost --- if your using it to practice for long range shooting (wind dope) in larger calibers, Try to stay below 10x
The trajectory of a subsonic 22lr to 300 yds duplicates a 308 rd to 1000 yds. (drops are the same,). Consider a scope in the 4-6x with a 308 drop cam, or at the very least a reticle with hashs every .5 mil or 1 moa.
Correction for wind drift in the reticle or windage knob is almost more important than drop. Mk4 6.5x20 leo,and IOR 4x, with 308 drop cam.
