    Posted: March/27/2012 at 05:42
I've had this SS 3 - 9 X 42 scope on a Remington 700 .308 for about a year now and am still amazed at how well it performs especially for the money invested.  I rarely have an opportunity to shot at distances greater than 300 yards and am wondering what kinds of distances some of you have been able to manage with this scope.  You see, I live in Mesa, AZ and have plenty of places to shoot out in the desert but have yet to find a good place to test the limits of this scope.  I think I just need to invest a little and join the range since it's within 15 min of my house.  There I'll be able to shoot out to 700 yards I believe.   So far I've avoided it because I just like the freedom of shooting at will.

Oh, and, I just saw the 5-20x50 and am thinking I may just be morally obligated to owning one.

I have shot mine out to 1,000 yards with a 308win. I have a 20 MOA rail and it was 10Mil to hit the steel. I shoot at a 12inch by 12 inch steel plate. I paint it orange and it is fairly easy to see when in cooler temps. The heat mirage was the main issue when the temps got up to 60+degrees. I live in Ga and it stay fairly humid. A dry climate it might not be as bad. But over all the SS3x9 did really well. For anything over 500 I would like more power but it did just fine for the target practice I was doing.

Now, the 5x20SS. don't get one.... If you do you will have 2 or 3 or 4 of them before it is over. I have looked/use many top brand scope and the 5x20SS is at the top of the list if not leading the race. I have shot them out to 1,200yards and they are great. At 15 power the 12x12 was easy to see @1000 yards. The glass is very clear, great eye relief. When you find the sweet spot on eye relief the edge to edge clarity is very nice. I have never got the tunnel affect with the SS5x20 as I do with many other scope. I got in a big bind and had to sell all but one of my rifles and the scope had me more tore up about selling that anything else did. I still miss it. Oh- I also used it for hunting.

BD,
Thanks for the info.  I had a slight feeling that the 3-9 would serve me at any distance I'll ever shoot my .308.  I'm very sad to hear that about the 5x20 because I'm a true addict in most uses of the word - if I try something and like it I will do it again; if I do something 3 x and enjoy it every time I'm stuck with it for life or until something better ( or shinier) comes along.   In other words, I might as well start setting funds away right now for the optics and for the long guns they'll go on....

yes sir, it is an addiction. One rifle lead me opticstalk (looking for a scope), that lead me to reloading my ammo. That lead me to gun smiting. Now I have a lot of buddies on the site I hunt with and see on a regular basis. This is  truly a great place to hang and you can get some great info from some smarter folks than myself.

Yeah, save up and grab a 5x20 as fast as you can. You will replace the 3x9. Then you have a reason to buy another rifle for the 3x9, then replace that 3x9 for another 5x20, then the circle of life takes over.Bucky

For me, my concern with 3-9x42 wouldn't necessarily be distance, my max would be 500 yds. But this would fill a hunting role as well. Does anyone have experience with this scope in dawn/dusk scenerios? I know this is a tactical based scope and I don't know how much of a concern that is with them.

When hunting after dark select the mil quad reticle the heavy posts can be picked up very well under starlight conditions when hunting coyotes at night. If you need something even easier to pick up in total darkness the only thing better is illuminated reticle scopes like Trijicon and  Aimpoint scopes or go to the 5-20x50 SS with illuminated reticle.

Urimaginaryfrnd-

Gotta say they've grown on me. What do you think of the low light with this scope?

Best I have. There is better like Heinsoldt but I dont have three grand for an optic. Better glass than my Leupold Mk 4 plus FFP and Illumination on my 5-20x50 Thunbs Up  The 3-9 doesnt have the illumination but it is the bargain of all optics.

So what your saying is that you wouldn't hesitate to put it on your rifle and have it in your hands when the deer of a lifetime presents itself with 30 seconds to go.

Where's the slug gun, I'm pretty sure that's legal there. Although, the point is taken. I can see I need to add a few toys to the "collection".

Slug guns suck they are so inaccurate compared to a rifle they barely qualify as a modern firearm. Lets see what works better a musket where I have one shot that I can keep in the X at 200 or a shotgun that can barely stay in the x at 50yds. No wonder I hunt with a bow.

Nice buck. Is he missing part of his left ear? I'm not sure, but I thought I saw an SS sight on that bow rig.Big Smile

Nope, I would grab it before any other scope I have owned.
