I've been lurking and searching over this forum (and several others) for a while and have ready possibly thousands of posts by now, but alas I am still in a quandary as to what to do for my new scope on my new Savage 10FP in .308.

Option #1:  Super Sniper 10X - ~$300 - seems to be excellent from the many reviews I could find, fixed instead of variable though (not sure if that'll matter)

Option #2:  Super Sniper 16X - ~$300 - Also excellent from the many reviews, again, fixed vs variable issue, possibly more difficult to keep decent sight picture given that the exit pupil becomes very small on a 16X scope compared to a 10X meaning I've got to keep my head VERY still when shooting.

Option #3:  Mueller 3x10x44 TAC2 - ~$300 - seems to be decent value from the very few reviews I could find, variable (which is nice)

So there are my options.  I will be doing mostly target shooting anywhere from 100-1000 yards at my local ranges, but no hunting (too heavy).  I would love to have a SS variable, but that option doesn't appear to be viable right now since we don't know when they'll be coming out (we do know that it won't be for a while).  My main issue is that since my only rifle shooting experience has been with 3x9's (on my AR at less than 100 yards) and not much at that, I don't know if the 16X would be way too much for 100-200 yards or the 10X would be too little for 300-1000 yards or if I'll really want lower magnification (<x10) if my realistic minimum range is around 100 yards.  I think I would be shooting in the 200-500 range the most often.  Thanks for any advice you can give the long range newbie. :)

My savage 10FP in  .308 has a Leupold Mark 4 fixed 10X M3 scope on it.  The more I use a fixed 10X the more I like it. I also have a Super Sniper 20x that for some time resided on my savage 10FP .223 with Choate stock (heavy sucker). I ordered in a Mark4 PR 3-9x40 that I was going to put on my .50 cal Encore but I had some problems with the barrel and sent the barrel back to TC.  Mean while I switched out and put the 3-9 PR on the .223 and I really like it there since ammo is cheap. I took the SS 20 X and put it on my M1a  .308 and haven't made it to the range with that combo yet. I also have a 8.5-25 Leu MK4 ill on 700 PSS Rem .308.

That said my strong suggestion is buy the 10X Super Sniper or buy theLeupold 3-9x40 PR  Mark 4 Leupold Tactical as I think you will be happy with either one. If you can scrape together the money I would say buy the side focus 10X Super Sniper you will not regret that choice. I on the other hand have been thinking about trading my 20X for a 10X  SS but I just cant seem to part with it so I will probably keep it save up a little longer and then buy a 10X.

.  PS. dont buy the 16x unless all you will ever do is shoot paper from a bench.

In the $300 to $400 range this is the best you can do for a tactical gun. If you will never use it as a true tactical gun and all it will ever do is paper you could put a Weaver Grand Slam variable or a Nikon Monarch variable on it and have better glass but not as good of tactical knobs and the advantage of a higher variable like a 6-20.  I like my 8.5-25x50 real well but I can use it on 8.5.  My fixed 20X is really strong for a fixed power but it is nice for paper targets. What is right for you really depends on how you use the rifle.
