SPS Tac....shorter, more conventional barrel and slightly better stock, IMO.

I can't quite get myself to like the 3 sided barrel of the vtr.

They really shoot, though--and the triangular contour makes for a relatively light rifle that still has a fairly stiff barrel.

What is the muzzle blast like from the ported VTR barrel?

Not as bad as with most ported barrels, because it goes straight up, and the ports are actually beyond the end of the muzzle. I wouldn't want to shoot it without ear protection, but it actually sounds pretty much like a normal rifle.

Sure got a hankering for a VTR in 223!  Good walk around varminter with a lot of class (or at least originality).

The triangle shape  for a hunting gun I think it makes a lot of sense - kind of the ultimate in fluted barrel still stiff but much lighter and more user friendly.  I really like the 20 in guns.

I haven't seen much difference in field performance in the .204 VTR, and I had a couple of 24" .204's before that. You can see it on the chronograph but with a good scope (mine has a 2-12x Swarovski Z6 with what their new long-range reticle is called) I can still shoot prairie dogs out to 600 yards, which is about as far as a .204 is going to work anyway.

So whats the story on shooting prairie dogs is it hunting on state or government land, because I cant see paying for a lease for that purpose, or do you just hook up with some rancher and ask permission.  I know that there are guys here that do hunt them cause South Dakota isnt that far but I havent gone after them yet.  Is there a season or is it open year around?
