I am looking for spotting scope advice.  My budget is no more than $500 total.  Will be used primarily when target shooting.  Ranges from 100 yards to 500 yards.  I don't know/understand much about optics, but would like to learn.  When better informed, I'll make good use of the knowledge.  Is there anything available?  I'd like to get some bang for my buck.  Also, any advice on how or where to begin learning more more about optics is appreciated.  Thanks.....joe

Most target shooters asking for spotting scope advice on this forum would like to see .30 cal. bullet holes at insane distances, say 500 yards. I don't think that it would be possible with any kind of scope, but i promise that i will try this. I will take my handpicked "cherry" sample Swarovski 80 mm HD and 4 other scopes or different brands and models and i will actually try to see bullet holes as far as possible. I will do this as soon as i find some time.

Here are a few comments:

1. buy yourself some of those targets that "splatter" or make holes visible in pink or green when hit

2. With $500, your best choice would be a Pentax ED 65, but, it does not have an eyepiece. A 30x fixed power eyepiece would be an extra $200 or so. Another choice would be the Kowa 60mm scopes.
