I am considering the purchase of a spotter for hunting.  I would like to get opinions on the best field spotter for around $500.  Should I save my money and get a higher end spotter or look at the refurbs on the sample list like the Nikon xl.  I would go a few hundred more if I thought that I would not get what I need for $500

I forgot to add I am also looking at a used Leupold 12-40 X 60 for $700.  Would that be worth it or could I do better?

If that is the newer Gold Ring scope, it sounds good because of the warranty, durability, and compact size - but the optics did not impress me compared to the "around $1000" crowd. They are excellent scopes, though. In the $500-$700 range look for Pentax 65 mm or Nikon Fieldscope 65 mm. They are as good as they get. If your hunting is in rough terrain with lots of hiking, i suggest a Nikon Fieldscope ED 50 mm. Awesome scope.
