I recently bought a Nikon Aculon 10x25 and although it’s the perfect size for me to fit in my pocket, I found that it was slightly ‘milky’ to look through. Things were crisp and clear but everything looked like it was being viewed an almost transparent white filter - almost a slightly misty look to everything. I don’t have any issue with my eyes and everything looks clear without the bins. I asked my wife to look through them and she also said the same thing.
I figured it was the Nikon and ordered a similarly priced Opticron Oregon LE WP and found when these arrived, they also looked the same - everything looks just a little milky but the edges of the image were clearer and didn’t have the slight halo effect that the Nikon had. I know that these are pretty cheap binoculars (£70-£80) but am I expecting too much from these things at this price? A friend of mine suggested that I get a Porro prism binocular instead of these but I’m really not familiar with these at all. I don’t do anything serious with these - mainly take them out when I go cycling or walking but it would be nice to have something that had a better (slightly less milky) image! Can anyone suggest anything?

The Nikon Aculon 10x25 binocular is a mini or compact binocular with a roof prism. The advantage of mini binoculars is that they are very portable and light weight which is good for travel and all around carry. For some people, the ergonomics and eye relief is poor on mini binoculars depending on your eyes and whether you wear glasses. It's also possible that your binoculars are faulty. You can always return them or exchange them for another brand. I have Cabelas 8x25 Intensity HD mini binoculars. I really like those binoculars -- good clarify and light dispersion.
Comparable mini Porro binoculars might be a littler larger than your binoculars. I hear the Leupold and Vortex mini or compact Porros are good. If the eyepiece that you look through is offset from the objective (big) lens, then it is Porro prism. If the eyepiece is in a straight line with the objective lens, then it is roof prism like the Nikons that you own. The regular size Porro binoculars that I own are much larger with higher magnifications. I use them on a tripod for astronomy or in place of a spotting scope.
