A few were more than the rifle, but for the most part it's been well less of the rifle cost.

i think its harder to part with rifles than it is scopes. a gun has more sentimental value.

All of my scoped rifles have scopes that cost 1.5X or more than the bare rifle. But after adding a good bipod, replacing the bottom metal with a detachable mag system on a couple of them, that evens out the equation pretty good, especially if you lump the base and rings with the rifle.

I have one scope costing more than the typical rifle. It cost more than the base rifle it was on, but then it found it's way on to an Accumark. If money was no object though, all of my rifles would wear Zeiss Victorys, or Hensoldts. Bucky Unfortunately right now my scope purchases have been limited to about $800.

All my scopes cost more than my rifles except for a 3-9SS I have on a Remington 5R 308, but I probably paid to much for the rifle. Rifles come and go but good scopes last a lifetime, very seldom wear out and the only reason to get rid of one is to get a better one.

How about a $750 conquest on a $200 Rem 700, circa 1979.

I would say that every scope I have sitting on a gun cost more than I paid for the gun (I have found some killer deals on some of the guns).  The two exceptions would be my 17HMR which would match the price of the scope, and my new AR build that for now will have an Aimpoint Comp M2 (thanks SWFA for the great price on that scope).  Some day, I might have a scope that will beat out the cost of the gun.

Have several, but that is based on what the scope retailed for, not what I paid for the scope.  Gotta love demos...

Well, there you have it. The secret is to shoot as long as possible with irons and save your money for quality optics later on.

Well you guys must all have cheap rifles thenWink

They have not yet made a scope that costs more then my rifles do after gunsmithing, barrel changes, trigger replacement, bedding etc!!

Jokes aside, I invest more in the rifle and use mid priced scopes.(Leupold)

Same here, scope cost more than rifles.
Only exception is my 22 LR Ruger M77/22 that has an old Leupold 6x42 on top.
But still great for plinking and an occational mag pie, fox  or crow  Big Smile

Back in the mid 90's I bought an Elite 4000 that I put on my Marlin 444. It cost more than the rifle, but to be fair , I had the gun for several years when I bought scope. And the Viper I bought this past year would have cost as much or more than the 110 I put it on, except for Vortex putting them on sale. And this year I will move the Viper to an old Ruger 44 carbine and buy a new scope for my 110. Not sure what, but looking at something along the Viper, 4200 or Monarch price line. So then I will have three scopes that cost more than the gun. And if I WAS rich, (i ain't) every gun I own would wear a Zeiss or Swaro!

All but one of mine are, but I only have $500 Tikka T3s and cheap Marlins. I usually put my money in the optics first, then break 'em.
