A few were more than the rifle, but for the most part it's been well less of the rifle cost.

I have at least 6 scopes that I know of that cost as much as 2x more than the rifle they sit on.

All of my scoped rifles have scopes that cost 1.5X or more than the bare rifle. But after adding a good bipod, replacing the bottom metal with a detachable mag system on a couple of them, that evens out the equation pretty good, especially if you lump the base and rings with the rifle.

I have one scope costing more than the typical rifle. It cost more than the base rifle it was on, but then it found it's way on to an Accumark. If money was no object though, all of my rifles would wear Zeiss Victorys, or Hensoldts. Bucky Unfortunately right now my scope purchases have been limited to about $800.

All my scopes cost more than my rifles except for a 3-9SS I have on a Remington 5R 308, but I probably paid to much for the rifle. Rifles come and go but good scopes last a lifetime, very seldom wear out and the only reason to get rid of one is to get a better one.

How about a $750 conquest on a $200 Rem 700, circa 1979.

I would say that every scope I have sitting on a gun cost more than I paid for the gun (I have found some killer deals on some of the guns).  The two exceptions would be my 17HMR which would match the price of the scope, and my new AR build that for now will have an Aimpoint Comp M2 (thanks SWFA for the great price on that scope).  Some day, I might have a scope that will beat out the cost of the gun.

Have several, but that is based on what the scope retailed for, not what I paid for the scope.  Gotta love demos...

Well, there you have it. The secret is to shoot as long as possible with irons and save your money for quality optics later on.
