That story is very interesting!

His gun is nothing rare either, you can get a "Savage Mark II F" at Wal-Mart for $117. He was using that same action, only the version which has a stainless steel barrel and wood stock (as opposed to chrome moly barrel and synthetic stock).

Here is more on the rifle he uses :

22 and 22mag are actually quite lethal.  Some Special Forces guys were dropped behind the lines in Vietnam with  22mag bolt actions, and one of them told me it was very effective because the noise level was so low compared to the noise of a highpower rifle.

Very interesting test!  I'm quite surprised the .22LR provided complete penetration through a frozen turkey wrapped in multiple layers of clothing at that distance!

This brings to mind about when I was a 12 year old kid hunting crows with a 22lr. My younger brother was carrying the rifle. He jokingly aimed at a guy ploughing in the field some 400 yds away and pulled the trigger. To my horror a shot went off. I expected this guy to fall off the tractor, mortally wounded, but he never did! He never even knew about the shot in his direction.
To this day I still go cold if I think what could have happened.

I forgot to add that I love it when a guy like this takes the time and effort to test a theory in a proper analytical manner. It is of huge benefit to the rest of us.
