Train like you fight!!!
If your AR wears a Comp M4s quick detach it and use it on your 22 training weapon.
Or buy a second identical optic same same as your AR.
Personally I dont see any benefit in AR platform 22 rifles other than to play with cheaply.
Want to learn how to shoot better buy a bolt action 22 and slow down the rate of fire and learn to aim -  one shot one kill the concept entirely missed my most owners of semi auto rifles.

I appreciate your reply, when i speak of training i am talking about training my son in the handling and shooting of a tactical weapon. Unfortunatly here on Long Island,  kids cannot go to the range and shoot anything other than a .22 rifle. I want to share my hobby with my children as they become of legal age (12) here. He has been shooting with iron sights and i was looking to put an optic on the 15-22, to show him how this will enhance his accuracy in certain situations.

Long Island -ouch  NY rules suck I lived in Rochester 3rd grade through 8th.  I started shooting at age 3 in Texas and I am convinced that starting kids no later than age 5 is ideal if you ever want them to learn to handle firearms safely.   I still say train like you fight. If you are running an AR and use an ACOG or  Comp M4s or EoTech or magnified optic put it in LaRue quick detach mounts and use it on the 22.   If you want a dedicated 22 scope :

Weaver 2.5-7x28 Classic Rimfire Rifle Scope Dual-X Weaver 2.5-7x28 Classic Rimfire Rifle Scope
Stock # - 849431
  • Matte
  • Dual-X
  • 1"
$139.95
If you really want to teach him about tactical optics:
SWFA SS 6x42 Tactical Riflescope SWFA SS 6x42 Tactical Riflescope
Stock # - SS6X42
  • Matte
  • Mil-Dot
  • 30mm
  • Rear Focus
  • OK for .50 cal
  • 1/4 MOA
$299.95
The real down side of using an AR based 22 is your scope mount will cost you as much as a standard 22 rifle. The La Rue or the BOBRO  quick detachable mount is still the correct mount.
See Kit #6 with the 3-9 SS and mount :

I am also convinced that starting kids on a semi auto makes them want to shoot and shoot and shoot without regard to proper sight placement.  You may wish to also own a bolt 22 or lever gun something that slows down the rate of fire.  Try to find a place where you can set up reactive targets. Baloons, cans, water jugs steel or a pond with a stick etc floating in it so he can see the splash and get instant feedback on where the shot hit or if it hit.  When I started shooting my target was a mayonase jar lid nailed to a tree the nail was the target.  There is something to aim small miss small.  marksmanship is almost a forgotten art.

Figure i would throw in my 2 cents...
Below is a link to an optic that i think might fit your needs for being a range toy. I have one on my 15-22 and really enjoy it. Its a favorite of my neices and a nephews to shoot, they want the rifle that has the red donut to aim with. This combo is tough to beat at $150 with scope and mount.
Here is a review with some more pictures from one of the members here.

Welcome to the forum and hope you stick around.

+1 on what lumberjack149 said.
I use a 4x ACOG on a AR15 that is a dedicated 22RF to practice with, and it helps.

Package deal -- Sounds like a good suggestion for the 22; most of the time low power scopes are not picky about what is in focus up close where a lot of scopes made for high power rifles wont focus closer than 50 yds.
