Hello all,

--Been lurking a bit and decided to join up.

I own a pair of full size binos, which I believe are halfway decent (for the price I paid...definitely decent).

Recently, I've been looking at smaller binos.  --Pocket sized, compact and some mid sized binos.  My full size binos have their advantages, but they don't get carried around much because.....well, they're big.

I am wondering which smaller binoculars the experts around here like to use and carry?

There is a break in the ease of use for binocs around 30mm.
Below that, the glass gets finicky in terms of eye placement, so the viewing comfort suffers.
Unfortunately, most 30mm glasses are bigger than pocket size.

For compact, the small Zeiss 8x20 Conquest is small and has good optics, at a price which is high but not totally extortionate. The Leica Ultravid 8x20 is a bit better, according to reports, but a lot pricier.

There are lots of inexpensive small reverse porros.  They are fatter than the roof prism models, so less pocket friendly, but they offer good bang for the buck. The Pentax Papilio adds very close focusing capability, making it into a sort of long distance magnifying glass, great for museum visits or butterfly watching as well as conventional binocular viewing..

Thanks etudiant,

Perhaps I should set some criteria regarding what I'm considering?

General use/possibly carried at work

Something up to about $750 or less.

Something small enough to fit into a pants cargo pocket.

Something 7x or 8x.

Under 15 ounces, under 10 ounces would be even nicer.

Some ruggedness, waterproof, fog proof would also be nice.

These two binos seem to fit my criteria pretty well

I'm willing to spend more than what either of these aforementioned binos cost; these two smaller binoculars seem to fit my criteria pretty well though.

Also, it wouldn't hurt to have something that worked halfway decent in low light (I'm aware that low light and small binoculars don't really go together).

You have a high class problem.
Your budget is amply adequate for what you seek, at least imo.
I've no experience however with Vortex and I'm unsure about Steiner because their plastic body military glass was unreliable, at least in the opinion of the German Army.
So you need more widely experienced inputs.
Hopefully someone on this forum like Bitterroot Bull will chime in.
