Slug guns are becoming more popular around where i live.  A lot of counties only allow the use of slug guns.  I have been interested in them and have been looking around for one.  I just bought one and dont know a lot about them.  I have an Remington 870 Express, how far can i shoot it?  What yardage should i site it in at?  Its a rifles barrel, so what kind of shells should i shoot out of it?  What kind of scope should i put on it, something that works good but isnt too too expensive.  Any other comments about slugs guns would be appreciated.

Had great luck with Hornady SST's sabot rounds .. bore site the shotgun and start at 25 yd.s and work your way up . Most quality rifled slug guns can group well enough at 100 yds to consistently take the intended game . 150 yd.s is the typical max range you'd want to try .

I've always used remington copper solids, there are newer and faster slugs available, but these work excellent in my mossberg 695.  I sight in at 100 yrds.

I put a hastings barrel on my Rem 1100 and have tried several different slugs. keep in mind that not all guns will shoot alike. That being said the most accurate I have found is Brenneke heavy field short magnums. They are great for smooth and rifled barrels. I have tried slugs that cost 5.00 to 15.00 a box of 5 and none have been as consistant as the Brenneke.
If you are going to scope your shotgun you might as well treat it like a rifle. Look at scopes that will give you good low light visibility. If you will be hunting in early morning or the evening. If you try the Brenneke I hope you get as good a result as I have. I get clover leaf groups at 100yds. all day long. I have a scope set with target turrets on my 1100 and have no problem shooting to 200yds. In fact several yrs ago I made a head shot on a doe at 205 yds. These slugs have been awesome for me. Good Luck! And welcome to the OT.

I have tried slug guns from several different manufacturers and lots of different ammo and it seems like every gun likes different ammo. I had really good luck with Winchester sabbots with the last one.

Depending on your intend game would depend on your max effective range.  Taking say a small black bear would be maxed out at 100yds or so to maximize energy at impact.  Hogs, Deer 200yds should be safe as it a smaller game that probably wouldn't attack you if it wasn't a good clean kill shot.  Max power should be less than your typically 3x9. A Nikon like mentioned above has been on my moss. 500 for  almost 8 years and its perfect for the different ranges I shoot with a slug, 35yds to 200yds.

The only slug that is consistent out of my 1300 winchester is the winchester brand, and I have tried most. The 23/4inch shoot much better than the 3" and hold around 1.75"@100yds..Here in Ct. it is pretty hard to go much further than that in the woods. As far as a scope I use a fixed 4x Luepold, I am not a fan of leupolds but this doesn't get used much and I have other scopes I would like to replace first and 4x is just right for the 100 yards and closer, or occassionaly a little further.

I just picked up a HR Ultra Slug Deluxe 20g  last month and got it sighted in for a hunt. I started off with SST's and they shot pretty tight at 50 yrds but not what I was really looking for. Switched to Rem. Accutip 3" slugs and they shot great at 75yrds 4 shots nearly all touching.

Went hunting and shot a nice buck at maybe 25yrds and it blew a hole in the deer that you could stick a baseball in. He went about 5 yrds and dropped . My Dad was so impressed he borrowed it and shot a buck about a week later at 75yrds straight in the shoulder and dropped it. He said the entry hole was not big like my deer but that the shoulder was destroyed and the slug mushroomed huge but stayed together and was recovered in the off side.  I am a believer now............but they are about $3 a piece. But with performance like that .............I can deal with it........I won't be using the gun a whole lot anyway !

I got a rem 870 with fully rifled barrel last year.  Put the rem. saddle mount on (unless you have cantilever) and I put a nikon 2-7x32 prostaff on. But would have went with the slughunter if I had the money at the time.  Use the rem. 2 3/4 accutip sabots and sighted it in at 100 yds.  Unfortunately no opportunity presented a chance  to field test it during the december shotgun hunt.
