First off, Welcome to the OT.

I'm not a fan of a bore sight device that slides into the end of your barrel.  It could mess up the crown of the barrel, I might forget the danged thing is in there and open a barrel up like a banana.  All I can recommend is read the instruction manual more than once, never forget it's stuck in the end of your bore.

Well, if you stick it in the bore with the correct size spud and turn it on, it projects a laser beam on the line of bore, out to infinity (in theory.)
You then adjust your sights or scope to a point near that projected dot, (progressively lower than the beam dot as distance increases). This allows for trajectory; the bullet falls from the line of bore. For instance, your muzzleloader may drop 8 inches at a hundred yards. (Scientific Wild-^$$ Guess.; depends on load, etc. )
Set your sights or the scope's reticle to line up on a point 8 inches below your laser dot at 100 yards and you'll be on paper. (In theory).
You probably can't see that laser that far away, so use 25 yards and set the sights right on the dot. You'll be close.
Personally, I'd skip it completely because of potential crown and rifling damage.
Just use a big clean paper target and shoot it to zero it. Start at 25 yards if you think you may be way off paper at 100, and then move to 50, etc.
