I have an M96 Swede Mauser that bubba drilled and tapped, and bent the bolt-handle down.

Actually, bubba did quite a nice job of it, and the rifle looks very nice.

In a gun store I frequent, I temporarily installed bases, high rings, and tried to get various scopes to fit.

Not much luck.

In fact, the only scope in the store that would allow the bent bolt handle to clear the ocular objetive (correct term for eye-piece end?) was an old Leupold Vari-X II.

I own a 16X Super Sniper that I tried, but that one was way too thick to let the bolt handle clear.

What are some really skinny scopes that are at least 9X?

Would any of the Nikons be as skinny or more skinny than the Leupold Vari-X II?

The reason I'm asking is because I'd really like a mil-dot reticle, if at all possible.

Thanks in advance,

rhill

The monarch (at least most of the specs I saw) are 1.7 in (43mm) ocular.

Take a look at the Burris Fullfeild II and Sig Sel.  They both have 1.53 in (39mm) oculars.

The vari-x II has a 1.6 in (41mm) ocular.  The Burris could work for you.

Have you considered getting extra high rings?  That would give you more room to work with.  Just a thought.

I just noticed that you said it was an old Leupold.  How old is it, and do you know what the ocular diameter on it is?

Helo18, thanks for the replies.

As for the old Leupold, I don't know how old, but that sucker was old for a scope.

The box and package materials looked like they were from the 1970s at the latest.

The gun dealer had taken it in a trade.

Also, I never did put calipers to the ocular end to measure, so I don't know how skinny it was.

But that was about a year ago.

I opted to spend money on other things like outfitting a DPMS LR308 instead of scoping my bent-bolt Swede Mauser.

But now, about a year later, I've gotten a little more cash on hand, and have returned once again to the idea of scoping my Mauser, since it has been drilled, tapped, and had the bolt turned down and all.

I'll check out those other scope models, and look for some extra-high rings.

Thanks again,

rhill

Call SWFA and ask what they have that will work - I'm sure they can come up with a system for you.
