Thompson Center Encore. If your gonna have a single shot, you may as well have the option of interchangeable barrels/calibers.

I love SS rifles (have three). One is a Win Low Wall in .243. The next is a Browning B78 High Wall in .25-06. The last is a Ruger 1S in .300 H&H. All are lookers ... and shooters too. Don't have a TC (yet).

I actually have a G2 Contender- smaller and lighter than the Encore. It won't shoot the .308 or any large caliber, high pressure rounds. The Encore will shoot pretty much anything. Both can be configured as pistols, carbines or rifles. Encore can be used with black powder and shotgun as well. My Contender is a tack driver with handloads and will shoot with most bolt actions. Encore is pretty much the same design, just beefier. Lots of match grade barrels, stocks and so forth are made for them.

I have a TC G2 .45 muzzleloader and it also is a great shooter.

I have an encore with a 30-06 barrel and a 7mm-08 barrel, shoots great ( around 3/4" at 100 yds ) with factory ammo. I also have a Browning b78 in 25-06 and it is a tack driver with hand loads and a 1/2" rifle with winchester balistic silver tips.

Go with a TC Encore frame and a Bullberry barrel with thier stock and fore end which free floats the barrel and you will get true accruacy.  The TC barrels are minute of paper plate in comparison to the precise accruacy of the Bullberry barrels.  Night and day difference and Ive had .308 30-06 25-06 300wm .375 H&H 50 musket 12 ga slug 44mag and probably a couple Ive forgotten.  I still have the .375 H&H and the 50 musket in TC but I will never buy another TC barrel now that I have my first Bullberry barrel and fore end.

I have had a Ruger #1 they eject where TC only extracts. I would love to have a Ruger#1 in a large bore caliber.  I've looked real hard at the H&R single shot rifles and while fit and finish isnt their strong point I have heard good things about them.  I have one of their rifled slug gun 12 ga single shots.

If you want to get into the single shot game, get with this guy. Supposedly the best their is with a break open action rifle. I've spoken with him, and am considering one off his 444 based wild cats for an encore barrel. He undoubtedly makes some beautiful stuff.

Very nice Dave. I only have a TC in the pistol with a few barrels for it. I think a rifle based on the similar break action would be a fine gun.
My single shot is a Ruger #1 in 45-70 and it is sweet. I think this rifle may be one of Ruger's finest achievements. The fit and finish of the blued metal and wood is excellent and the stock is sweet.

I am sorry if that picture is misleading, I put it on their as an example of what he does, that isn't my rifle. But I hope to have him build me something similar to it next year. If you check out his forum he has done some work on a few rifles for Jim Shockey and a lot of custom encore, h&r, and CVA projects for people. He knows how to get bolt rifle accuracy from a break over rifle, and proves it.

How much do you have budgeted, what style of SS rifle do you prefer (falling block, break action, bolt action), and are you looking for a utilitarian tool, a "pretty" rifle, or something in between? Nice wood, synthetic, or laminated stock?

I'm a SS rifle fanatic, and can make recommendations, but first, I will need to know how much you're willing to spend and what features you're looking for?
